I noticed that most if not all newer motherboards with AMD sockets have ATI crossfire x technology built in. Intel boards seem to be using Nvidia SLI and Nvidia chipsets. I'm thinking that AMD boards will have problems running Nvidia cards and Intel boards will have problems running ATI cards. I'm also seeing AMD boards with socket AM3 support 16 GB of ram. So far, I've only seen Intel boards with socket 775 supporting 8 GB of ram.
I like the extra ram with AMD. I've also been using AMD for quite a while now but I've also been using Nvidia. Looks like I'm going to have to stop using one or the other. This is one of the factors delaying me building a new computer. It's getting quite confusing.

Re: AMD vs Intel
cartrite,
Nvidia's OpenGL tends to be better than ATI's.
There seem to be several companies manufacturing motherboards which support SLI, socket 775, and 32GB of main memory. MSI and ABIT are two.

Re: AMD vs Intel
I'll have to check into this. But I haven't seen any Intel boards with more than 8 gb of ram support at the discount wholesalers yet.

Re: AMD vs Intel
Just had a peek at the MSI home site and they seem to still make AMD boards with Nvidia chips. They also still make Intel boards with ATI chips. I only saw the Intel boards support up to 24 GB of RAM but that was socket 1366. After looking further, one board seems to support both ATI's CrossFire X and Nvidia's SLI.
More chaos.
