Nuclear War vs. EMP

I've seen the movie "The Day After", and after having seen the nuclear war scene a few times, I have to ask, wouldn't detonating a nuke in space over the enemy country disable not only the electricity, but also the nuclear warheads themselves, rendering the attacks useless?

How does the whole thing work anyway?

A description of that type of EMP is at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse

Nuclear weapons are designed to be shielded against it.
