The Earth has been destroyed.

Post #1by ajtribick » 09.09.2008, 23:26

According to the International Earth-Destruction Advisory Board (which has an official-sounding title, so must be truthful):

Evidence is still being collated, but preliminary results suggest that the Earth was destroyed pre-emptively by scientists at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, before the commencement of their experiments to locate the Higgs Boson, as a precautionary measure to ensure that the experiment itself could not result in the destruction of the Earth.

In a related subject, a question for the physicist(s) lurking around: why doesn't LHC use higher-temperature superconductive magnets, for instance something above the boiling point of N2? The accelerator would've been a lot cheaper, I think.

The high temperature superconductors that I'm aware of cannot handle high current densities, are available only in very small quantities and are extremely brittle.

Thanks to the Bad Astronomer, I found the LHC Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment Webcams... we're all doomed!

This black-hole business really ceases to be funny, meanwhile. A colleague of mine who wrote one of the first papers about the possible production of mini-black holes at the LHC, told me yesterday that he's completely saturated with report writing about this because there are a number of accusations that have been brought to various courts meanwhile!

Because of the damage that occured after a few hours of operation, the LHC is out of action until next spring as it seems (unfortunately)...

Very, very cool...
These are the kinds of pages you need to send us Brain-Dead types to in order to
learn some more of the intricacies of physics as a whole.

Thanks very much for the link Good Doctor. Like I said... Very cool.
