Is shatters running the latest version of phpBB?

and make a 2 day quarantine for new users.. which by the way is not a very pleasant solution...

You'd think there would be some way to detect whether a new user is posting the exact same thing in multiple topics... after all, this seems to be the preferred spamming methodology...

Chris,
At the CM we have managed to stop the bots 100%, by adding these two (simple) hacks to the phpbb template:
http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/6391 - a small routine that hides the website field upon registration, and only makes it visible afterwards. The bot tries to supply an URL anyway since it cannot see that the field is invisible. This is detected, and the registration process aborted.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/6432
Adds a question with a preconfigured "right answer" to the registration form. The bot is unable to reply, and the registration aborted.

These are for phpbb 2, but there is no reason i know of it would not work on 3. Installation is simple, you just have to add a few lines of code to a couple of template files, so it only takes a few minutes. There are precise instructions for that in the zips.

I wondered why I haven't seen any on the CM yet. Like Christophe says, they show up here almost every day.
Surely Selden deserves a break from this crap doesn't he?

Another solution is to ban those free email providers, like yahoo. It's pretty drastic, and it ain't pretty, but it should help.

Of course, that would mean I'd have to leave, since I use yahoo. :(

Hopefully, this will be the end of the spam bots.

Perhaps this reflects some sort of impurity within my heart...

... but I don't care. If they choose to come to our forum and do virulently spread their pointless garbage, then they deserve no compassion, no kindness, no mercy.

Ban them.

Why are you just copying STUFF from the net in your posts? This is the second such post.

Copying large passages from other sites without quoting the sources is BAD style!

Hey there, Good Doctor...

Do you really think that these people care about such trivialities?
Do like *I* do, and barrage poor, befuddled Selden with requests to "DELETE this garbage, and BAN these A******* forever..."

Have a nice day. <smirk>

Right you are, Bob.

It was meant to be my last warning. If his commercial website link had appeared anywhere outside his profile that warning would not have taken place.
