Thanks Fridger, I've never seen an aurora i.r.l. but this looks so amazing. I wonder what people thought of it long before they could understand it.

I have seen incredible Aurorae when attending a conference in the "exotic" location of Sariselkae ( Northlappland) close to Russian Murmansk

Almost every evening, I spent outside watching...

I can imagine, lucky you!
Though I love my country with all it's waterways, it does take a few years to appreciate.

I had a chance to witness a spectactular aurora event in July of '04. It was during a period of severe sunspot activity and series of coronal-mass-ejections were sent out that hit Earth the next day. I remember driving home one night and seeing this huge whitish-like stream of light that resembled a searchlight beam - thing is, it was stationary during my 25-plus-mile drive home. Upon descending into a nearby estuary that overlooked a vast expanse of Puget Sound, I noticed the most brilliant auroral display I had ever seen. It completely filled the northern horizon from east to west and expanded to the zenith. Aurora usually aren't visible in Washington State, but that night, they were visible from as far south as Southern California.

If only I had gotten pictures of that event that night...
