My wife just sent me the new numbers for Kiel University:

53 % of the Diplomas in Mathematics are now by women!

[The German Diploma is a bit more advanced than a Masters, but roughly comparable]

This is quite a remarkable percentage, I think!

Here are a few more references to female shooting stars in my field of theoretical particle physics.

Univ.Washington: Prof. Ann Nelson
http://www.phys.washington.edu/users/anelson/
She got her PhD from Harvard

SLAC & Univ. Stanford: Prof. JoAnne Hewett
http://cosmicvariance.com/joanne/

Fermilab/Chicago: Dr. Marcela Carena
http://home.fnal.gov/~carena/
She is from Argentina and got her PhD at my Department in Hamburg ;-)

Univ. Durham/UK: Dr. Gudi Moortgat-Pick
http://physics.princeton.edu/~mcdonald/ ... 22_IMG.JPG
She was a Postdoc at my Institute.

DESY Hamburg: Dr. Laura Covi
http://physicschool.web.cern.ch/physics ... L2003.html
She is my office neighbor and a permanent staff...
(Of course we got more women theorists ;-) )

...and so on.

++++++++++++++
Would anybody really suggest that these kinds of women might have any interest in that sort of forum:
++++++++++++++

"Health, Dating, Sex, Parfume..." female forum ;-)

Why not in our forum??

PS: Read a Blog by JoAnne ...see what science is like ;-)

Men on the other hand (again, generally spoken) are more easily carried away by (sometimes) seemingly futile endeavours and tend to forget other aspects of their lives more easily. (At least, that's why I need women as a counter force in my life.)

That view I share completely. But the question remains, why this forum tends to offer so little to women?

Programming certainly is not futile, but it takes a considerable investment to become proficient.

Just visiting these forums to read and chat about the universe in general (and Celestia in particular) like quite a few of us do, might seem futile though.

Here are a couple more power women (and old friends of mine) in my field of theoretical particle physics & cosmology

Shirley Jackson was the first black woman who EVER was awarded a PhD from M.I.T (in any subject) !!

The real question is not about how many women are regular posters on this forum.
The real question is how many regular members are still really active here.
A dozen?

Well, it depends on how you define the word active. I'm activly reading all new interesting posts in this forum many times daily, but since I have nothing intersting to say I keep my mouth shut...

I'm patiently waiting for t00fri's updated nmtools and his 'new' txtools, so I'll keep checking out the forum until I have this new toys...

You guys do have some funny ideas about us. lol
I've always been interested in science and science fiction but often find myself in the minority when it comes to gender. I'm not sure why but it just seems more guys are interested in this kind of thing. The only reason why I don't have a career as a scientist of some kind is because I'm just plain stupid. :?

You are definitely NOT stupid, Reko...
You definitely have more brains than myself, as should be evident from my
mis-handling of ML files, and my often mis-understood comments on this board.

Please understand that I, personally, am just an average bozo who has a real
love for the universe, and all of it's mysteries.

Although, your avatar does seem to characterize you as a "geek." Hee, hee.
Please don't hurt me. :D

I am always pleased by Reiko's creative, artistic avatars that also keep changing from time to time. :D

Recently there was an interesting finding from a large-size investigation: intelligence was said to be predominantly a matter of training rather than a "material constant" of peoples' genes...

So there are good chances for almost everyone ;-)

Tia,
Sorry but learn to use the quote button. It looks like you are repeating what I said.

You accidentally delete something? I have you beat. I once deleted a project I was working on to combine a models together for an addon. The worst part is I went even further and empty my recycle bin out of habit. I had to start all over again. :(

As for why there are not more women here into celestia, I think it's training too. Women are not often raised with encouragement to go into science so you see a gender ratio favoring men. Keep in mind this is just my personal experience and does not apply to every individual.
That said, I have managed to get a few cousins, friends and my mother into celestia, all women. :)

Wow,...I just noted that this thread got as many as 11460 hits!!! So it must have raised a question of interest to quite a few ;-) . Who are they? What comes to mind immediately is how the gender might have been shared among those 11460 readers?? ...

Any ideas? speculations?

I have been reading this thread with some interest. I have thought about it myself, but only quietly.I can't speak for others, but my opinion would be that if the forum members would be able to tell their female friends, girlfriends, wives and colleagues about Celestia, perhaps they would take an interest themselves, and maybe also take part in the forum as well.

That is my suggestion anyway,

I've told my mother, two aunts, and three close friends. All woman and all run celestia. Not sure why my friends don't post on the forum but my aunts can't read English so they ask me when they have a question.

Unfortunately, I seem to remember that the concrete resources I was referring to were written in German. Possibly they translated them from an English original, though
