Post #1by Sitting Duck » 09.11.2005, 20:36

Or is the forum only english-allowed.

No it is not only English speaking. However, you will probably reach more people with English than Dutch. There are many who speak German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc, and I think Buzz and julesstoop are from the Netherlands. Haven't seen too much Dutch spoken in the forum though...

Maybe you could pose your questions to Buzz or julestoop for translation? Of course, I do not know their fluency in nederlandstalig. Parlez vous Francais or sprechen sie Deutsches? Many people speak those here, and some of us understand some of it. :) I could run your questions through a translator, but I do not think they work that well...

Yes, c'est vrai, ich bin Nederlandstalig! I wonder if all Belgians would agree French to be the secondary language though

You can try this translation service, http://babelfish.altavista.com/ but I am afraid that your Dutch -> English might not come out all right. However, do not worry too much as we can probably piece together what you are trying to say.

U kunt deze vertaaldienst proberen, http://babelfish.altavista.com/ maar ik ben bang dat uw Nederlands - het Engels zou niet uit kunnen komen al recht. Nochtans, me maak niet teveel ongerust aangezien wij kunnen waarschijnlijk samenvoegen wat u probeert om te zeggen.

I know. C'est la raison je dit de parler le Francais ou l'Anglais. Sorry for my poor French, it has been a long time. :)

LOL, The translation back to English from Dutch is horrible, guess babelfish has a way to go. You might be better off sticking one in your ear...

Oh I don't know, I've seen people who know only English who write worse than this.

What does vertaaldienst mean?

I see that Dutch has a lot of cognates (where words from one language ook the same and mean the same thing in another language)! I know nothing of Dutch and already I can translate some of it and guess other parts.

I can also why people say Dutch is a gibberish language based on the above translation and this word, "waarschijnlijk." Let's see how the computer pronounces this word...

*Minimizes this window and brings up Control Panel*

I'll be back.

Continuation:

I stuck the word in and Microsoft Sam seems to only pronounce waarschi before he messes up, that or he's right after all.

Bablefish gave me this for "translation service". Plus, it's bad enough I went to Bablefish for a translation, but MS Sam would truly butcher a language. There are numerous consonent sounds that it would not pick up on.

@Sitting Duck:
Ik kom inderdaad - zoals buggs opmerkte - uit Nederland en heb er geen bezwaar tegen om zo nu en dan eens een persoonlijk berichtje te krijgen als iets niet duidelijk is in het Engels.

Dutch is a language with relatively many long words which might contain seemingly odd sequences of consonants.
Consider words like: 'Herfststorm', 'nachtschade' or even something like the hardly ever used: 'zandzeepsodemineraalwatersteenstralen'.

I myselfs am particularly fond of the non-existant word 'herfstschroom' which would translate to 'autumn shyness'
