Sadly, there are many people who have no understanding whatsoever of science, the scientific method or how scientific inquiry is actually implemented. Misunderstood and poorly written popularizations can easily persuade people that explanations that they devise themselves will be much more reasonable than what they've read -- which too often actually is true. They don't realize that the theories they're tying to debunk aren't the real thing.
The BAUT (Bad Astronomy and Universe Today) forum has a section where theories which are "against the mainstream" can be proposed and dissected. http://www.bautforum.com/forumdisplay.p ... Mainstream
I do not believe that the Celestia forum is an appropriate place to discuss such theories, nor is it appropriate to poke fun at people who can't defend themselves.
