Well...

My nominal line speed is pretty good (2 MByte/sec). But with many servers I only get 100 KByte/sec because they are saving their money....

shatters.net or the Motherlode(ibiblio) are examples of typical 100 KByte/sec download resources... Since ChrisL is paying the costs from his pocket money...no motivation to live in Japan ;-) . The reasons are obvious.

I got a midrange service and my top download speed is about 580kbytes/sec(.gov servers) although most downloads are in the 300kbyte range. Apparently the best I can get from my ISP is 1 Mbyte/sec.

I mean 16Mbit/sec = 2 Mbyte/sec which is a popular standard now in Germany. But only for download. Uploading is MUCH slower.

Here is an actual speed test I did 1 minute ago:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Download-Geschwindigkeit: [++] : 14.589 kbit/s (1.824 kByte/s)
Upload-Geschwindigkeit: [++] :.........1.006 kbit/s (126 kByte/s)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I've just measured mine (advertised as ADSL 1Mbit/s) to several servers:
Buenos Aires, download = 126 kbyte/sec, upload = 54 kbyte/sec (<-almost exactly 1Mbps)
Florida (USA), download = 230 kbyte/sec, upload = 50 kbyte/sec
Dusseldorf, download = 169 kbyte/sec, upload = 41 kbyte/sec
Tokyo, download = 78 kbyte/sec, upload = 30 kbyte/sec

Your rates pretty well match the specifications. This is non-trivial for the servers that are very distant from you. Normally then one encounters high latencies which in turn needs big values for the RWIN buffer size etc.

Sure, Fridger, I agree. I'm just sad that my ISP does not offer a faster service. Sniff.
(I've got 4Mbit/sec at my job, not ADSL though, some other thing.)

Of course....but as a little consolidation: I wrote above that for reasons of money saving numerous servers cut down their speed, whence I get not infrequently ONLY ~100kByte for download (despite a much faster line).

I always find the european convention of "."'s instead of ","'s makes your speed seem somewhat modest (on first glance). :wink:

Indeed, notably since the international scientific notation is just opposite ("." <-> ","). Also in Europe!
