What colour is Mimas?

Post #1by The Singing Badger » 15.10.2005, 21:55

The default settings for Celestia give Mimas a reddish colour, whatever texture is used. This is easy to remove by editing the .ssc but I'm wondering what the rationale is - is there any evidence that Mimas is indeed reddish?

I'm afraid my knowledge isn't complete, but I'll have a stab. The Voyager mission returned pictures of Mimas that were reddish in colour, along with the other icy Saturnian satellites. Voyager used, I think, combined colour filters of orange, green and the ultra violet. Cassini is using all sorts of camera filters: but red green and blue reveal Mimas to be just grey. If Mimas has any particular hue it has to be seen in a highly exaggerated false colour view.
