sand glass shape

Why do the remote galaxies look like an "sand glass" shape?

Is there anything to do with the minkowski cone?

No, it's just because that's where they've been pointing the telescope. It'll take too long and cost too much for them to do a full all-sky survey.

If you turn it around in Celestia, you'll find that they're actually arranged in planes and point toward the Sun. If you look at it from the Earth, you'll see that they correspond to rectangular areas on the sky.
