I've been watching live updates of the MER-A Spirit landing at spaceflightnow.com, and a few minutes ago Mission Control just received a signal from Spirit, now sitting safely in Gusev Crater. Congratulations MER team!
Now, I'm going to replay the even in Celestia . . .

Yes!! 3x times the image quality of Pathfinder, we could have some excellent desktop wallpapers coming up in a while.
See also here for an event log of the descent and landing:

Congratulations to NASA and JPL on the successful landing of Spirit on Mars!!!
EVERYTHING, every single part, in the EDL (Entry, Descent and Landing) program worked PERFECTLY!
My wife and I have been watching the live TV feed on NASA TV all night long. It was a very tense 10 minutes between the time of the first signal at landing (they think) and the confirmation tones. The MGS (Mars Global Surveyor) team played a big part in transferring the UHF transmissions from Spirit back to Earth. It was REALLY COOL to watch and listen as it all happened.
Awesome!

That's the Spirit!
Pictures of the Martian surface are always the most evocative, at least for me. I'm looking forward to the colour pictures, good desktop material indeed!
Well done and congrats to all involved.

Here's hoping that Spirit may have discovered a sedimentary rock
