Solstices and equinoxes

Post #1by Evil Dr Ganymede » 23.09.2003, 07:28

Since September 23rd (tomorrow or today, depending on when you're first reading this) is the Autumnal Equinox for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere (and the Spring Equinox for those down under), I have another odd question with a twist.

The Summer and Winter Solstices occur a few weeks before or after the points in our orbit when the Earth is closest and furthest from the sun (I think the order depends on what hemisphere you're in). Is that just a coincidence? Or is the timing of the solstices (which AFAIK are just down when the tilt of the earth is maximum relative to the plane of the orbit) somehow related to the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit?

Or have I totally failed to understand how this works? ;)

It IS pure coincidence...

There is no relation between the perihelion/aphelion and the inclination around the tilt axis of a planet.
