The rock was given to Willem Drees, a former Dutch leader, during a global tour by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin following their moon mission 50 years ago.

Drees was a socialist. A good one, mind me, but in most American eyes probably socialist enough to be considered deviant, especially then. The funny thing is that he's more or less responsible for my present day job: he designed en implemented our national state pension (AOW) which ensures for everybody in the Netherlands over 65 having a reasonable income. At the moment, I work for the government agency that (amongst many other things) makes sure that our pensionados actually get what they're entitled to.

Well, I don't want to comment the difference between US and Europe about certain political points of view, but as you have noticed, the moon rock seem to be given before the lunar landing (50 years ago!).

Eh, eh... The things are two: either the redactor is young so for him 40/50 years are the same, or actually he lives on the Moon.

I know that a moon rock given to the Dutch prime minister by Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969 has turned out to be a fake. I do not know Why 11 Astronauts did this thing?
Can anyone tell why they diid this thing?

I'm going to guess the Apollo 11 astronauts are not at fault for that, and instead, the rock was fake, and simply wasn't collected. The Apollo astronauts didn't go to the moon, find a fake moon-rock, and bring it back. Fake moon rocks are hard to find on the moon.

My first reaction to this story was
"Who cares? It's the gesture, not the fact that it's actually a piece of wood."
and forgive me if I sound flippant.

But if some moon-person gave me a piece of moon rock, I't stick it on the mantle-piece and wouldn't bother checking it: The story is far better than the truth, it's about a magical narrative, not some dudes prancing about in costumes in space.
You might as well ask "Jules Verne: How credible is that?".
And if it's a piece of wood and nobody knows - whaere's the harm?

But wait a minute! I had a brainwave, reading down at the further posts:
About other moon-rocks turning out to be fakes.
- One - that's plausible. But all moon rocks being fakes? How likely is that?
- Together with the (admittedly superficial) fact that nobody remembers exactly when they happened: Were these fakes given out before or after these clowns are supposed to have traipsed around this lunar desert?

It begins to sound fishy. And I mean downright utterly shortchanged on credibility.
What this brings us to, friends, is that the moon landings never happened!

Buzz et al, didn't have any real moon rocks to hand around. They just had a bundle of laughs in the Arizona desert filming moon landings with some dudes from Hollywood.
And I don't mind: It was a great movie - especially when they almost didn't make it back!

OK, ok, I'm just having a laugh: but I wouldn't be surprised if the "No moon-landings" conspiracy loons are even now putting packaging this in there with their conspiracies about flags, lights, and suchlike.

And Hungry4info: nice note: the concept of the moon astronauts finding fake rocks to bring back is a good one.

Perhaps, but when you apply that to the big picture, you realise the startling truth. NASA didn't just fake the moon landings, the whole moon is fake too
