Betelguese

Apologies for spamming the forum with questions.

Anyhoo, when Betelguese goes supernova, is it close enough to affect earth? Also, does it have one of it's poles pointed at us? I ask because I heard if a nearby star goes supernova and has one of it's poles pointed at us, we could be in for a gamma ray burst problem...

You might consider using Google. I've found that answers I search for myself usually stick with me. :)

It's discussed in a Wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betelgeuse
and in a discussion on BAUT at http://www.bautforum.com/astronomy/3507 ... -info.html

If I recall correctly, Betelgeuse's poles are not directly facing us.

But don't take my word for it... follow Selden's advice.

Oh, and by the time it does happen, it's unlikely that the human race will still be around anyway! (Unless we pull our fingers out, and colonise non-planetary space before we destroy the Earth's biosphere)

There was a map of the surface of Betelgeuse, made by a telescope.I?m not sure if it was an optical image. But it disappeared, the same way as Ceres?map.

A map of Betelgeuse's surface? If I recall, it's been resolved, and that's about it.

Surface imaging of Betelgeuse was done in 2006 (correction, 2000), detecting several hot spots.

It was a very very low resolution of Betelgeuse, but at least is better than the default M texture...the same for Ceres. :)

Yes,but someone DID a map,but this "texture" somehow disappeared, the same way as Ceres map.Is there any way to locate them or is it missing forever.
I?m not sure but I think I could find these in the defunct Nasa download servers... :?

I have an old copy of that betelgeuse telescope view texture on my other computer. If it is really needed, I will dig it up and post it here.

Well, I don't 'require' it, but I wouldn't mind seeing it here.
