Rings around Rhea?

Post #1by ajtribick » 06.03.2008, 20:55

Well this is interesting...

NASA: Saturn's Moon Rhea Also May Have Rings

The Saturn system is turning out to be very interesting indeed... we already have Trojan satellites, horseshoe orbits and suchlike, and now possibly rings around a moon.

Hey, thanks very much for the link. Very interesting indeed.
What an amazing solar system we live in. :D

Any plans to incorporate this into celestia?
Or do we not have enough data.

We have far too little data. In addition, the ring system, if it exists, is not visible to the naked eye. As Cassini was departing Rhea, after the scientists had that ring idea, they turned the spacecraft at Rhea to search for rings with a 100 second shot. They found nothing. The ring, if it exists, is far, far too dark to be seen with the naked eye.

Using the data I've seen so far, I simply edited the Rhea entry in the default solarsys.ssc file to this:

"Rhea" "Sol/Saturn"
{
Texture "rhea.*"
Radius 764

CustomOrbit "rhea"
EllipticalOrbit
{
Period 4.517500
SemiMajorAxis 527040
Eccentricity 0.0010
Inclination 0.35
MeanAnomaly 190
}

UniformRotation
{
Inclination 0.0
MeridianAngle 195.0
}

Albedo 0.7

Rings {
Inner 1614
Outer 2034
Texture "neptune-rings.png"
}
}

Later!

Spaceman, is your Rhea texture the old one made from Voyager data? 8O ?

We got a so much better 4k Rhea texture in the 1.6 distribution. Also those rings are FAR too bright (for obvious reasons). I guess they can hardly be seen in visual light.

I like the colors of the surface :)

My computer isn't fully upgrade yet, so i use for now 2K textures. I also use bright rings to see them, if they are too dim they will be invisible :(

It's very easy to (automatically) colorate Rhea with GIMP according to some nice colored template of your gusto! Also it's even easier to reduce the 4k Rhea map of the distribution to 2k.
