Selden,

I am surprised, but the download is perfectly normal here with Firefox, both under Windows and Linux:

The link that I see on the page that Chris referenced is not a link to the 3ds file. It is a link to a SourceForge download php script. With Firefox, I very briefly see the download page generated by the script. It is immediately replaced by a Quicktime symbol when the file download starts, presumably because Windows on my computer thinks that Quicktime is the display program for tiff images. Since it isn't really a tiff image, Quicktime chokes.

I don't know why both browsers think the 3ds files are tiff images. When I saved the files using IE8, it automatically appended .tiff as the filetype, not 3ds. I manually changed the filetype to 3ds, though.

I think I'm going to have to deinstall Quicktime to fix part of the problem.

I have LONG deinstalled it. As a player, Quicktime is excellently replaced by Videolan's vlc, which plays all quicktime flavors perfectly and smoothly (as well as everything else). Moreover, I want ONE player for Windows and Linux, just as I want ONE browser etc.

But I don't understand why you get a .tiff file association. You can always check it and change it if necessary. Which applications are associated with .tiff in your installation?
I have associated .tiff with the GIMP.

In my case ChrisL's link works perfectly.

Looks like a bug in the model, as I'm seeing the same thing in both Celestia and a 3D viewer that I use. The model was exported from CATIA to 3ds format; perhaps there is a bug in the conversion tool.

You shouldn't need to go to such extremes. I have Qtime on my system, but I was able to download it OK, (although the model does show some faults as you described).
The problem with Qtime is that when you install it, it tries to take over the world by associating all sorts of file suffixes with itself. When I install it, I always un-tick all except the essential quicktime types, because I already have other programs associated with the other filetypes.
I would check your file-associations first, before un-installing...although I would be surprised if Qtime wa associated with 3ds suffix. Anyway, if it is, you might be able to just temporarily (or permanently) associate that file-type with a more appropriate program such as Anim8tor. :)
