Are there any good theories on what all those grooves are caused by? Is the rock itself stratified? That's seems implausile to me. On the other hand what other explanation could cause the grooves to be parallel and to run up and down topographic features?

I think there's one hypothesis that suggests they might be impact crater ejecta... blasted off from Mars. The ejecta is spread out in a line as it travels, and when Phobos intersects that, you'll be left with a linear feature on the surface when they hit it.

The photos are extremely detailed though, grooves or no grooves.
