Picture of Saturn rings

Hi all,

I've played a bit with some Cassini raw images and combined 12 of them to this color picture. Further image manipulation like sharpness filter was not applied!

Have fun!

Jens,

Absolutely spectacular image of the rings... Any chance you could use this
to create a better series of rings for use with Celestia?

Just thought I'd ask.

Thanks, Bob

Get a load of these ring images - there are some pretty spectacular examples of density waves, scalloped ring edges, clumping in the ringlets near the shepherd satellites, and wacky twisty bits in the ringlets.

AFAIK, all of these structures are caused by gravitational interaction between satellites and ringlets. Pretty stunning, eh?

That's the aim. 8)

Here is a preview.

Note: The brightness had to be reduced to correspont with the Saturn texture and the lates Cassini Saturn pictures.

Oh man...

Can hardly wait. These are truly spectacular and breath-taking images Jens.

Many thanks for your efforts here, as well as for the outstanding add-ons you've
given us in the past. I'm one of many - I'm sure - in your debt.

Thanks, Bob

Can you explain how you combined the RAW images?

The good news is that the new ring texture is ready as you can see but the bad news is that I'm not at home this weekend and you must wait until next week. The texture is "only" 2k but it's the best ring texture I've seen so far. ;-)

Thanks  :-) . There are a lot unready addons on my disk but I hope to find time to finish some of them. (e.g. high level tiles for earth VT, 8k Io VT, some DSO's, a lot of VT tools, ... )

ElPelado, there are several raw images made with red, green and blue filter available. You can copy or combine this to the channels of a RGB picture with Photoshop, Gimp or some other photo editor. Due the different capture time of the raw pictures some channels need to aligned a bit. That's all! :-)

Remember that you don't have to use images taken using red, green and blue filters to make a colour image - though obviously if you do then you'll get a true-colur image.

When I was making colour images from Voyager, I had to use OBV - Orange, Blue and Violet - because Voyager didn't take pictures of the targets that I wanted in red, green, and blue combinations. So I put the Orange in the red image channel, the Blue in the green image channel, and the violet in the blue image channel to make a slightly false colour image instead.

Last week I could found this pictures on the raw site but now it seem that the search function don't find all images. But the direct links works still.

http://saturn1.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/ ... mageID=359

I used the images with the ID349 to ID364.

Sorry, my English is bad. I mean the images from the ID 349 up to the ID 364 (349, 350, 351, 352, ...).
