"Modify" Declaration Question

Post #1by Dollan » 16.07.2006, 22:15

Is there a way to use the Modify declaration to rename an object? For instance, I want to rename a known extrasolar planet, but of course I can't use a new name because the program creates a duplicate world, rather than renaming it.

My main goal is to make this add-on so that a person doesn't have to delve into the default extrasolar.ssc and fiddle with that.

As far as I know, no. Neither is there a Delete option, which would enable you to get round this.

I have finally hit upon the method of modifying the object to become an empty.3ds, so you can't see it, then adding a new planet in its place with a different name;

this means you will find it if you go to the new or the old name, but you will only see the new model.

Can you detail the reasoning behind this this? Given the millions of unpopulated stars (or at least the thousands in the official distro), might it be better to add to one of them or create a new star rather than overwriting an existing known planet?

Keep in mind, I may just be confused as I tend to go along with the "scientificly accurate" premise of Celestia, so I'm not clear what the value of renaming a known planet is.

The renaming aspect is in regards to utilizing a known star in a fictional setting. While there are indeed many other suitable stars, the setting specifies this known star (in this case, Gliese 876). And in any case, it is often a fun exorcise in world buiilding to utilize known systems, and their known parameters.

Even in a scientifically accurate context it would be nice to be able to include the unofficial names of several extrasolar planets, such as Bellerophon, Osiris, Goldilocks and Millenium.
