Does the 2 million star database located at http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catal ... don_id=855 still work for the latest pre-version of Celestia? Or will there be any conflicts arising from installing it?

2 Million Star Database

It should work just fine. That's the one that was converted by Grant Hutchison in order to be compatible.
It does have some minor problems, but nothing that's a "show stopper." E.g. two of the stars of the Trapezium that are in the default stars.dat are missing from the 2million stars.dat. For details, see http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celest ... ezium.html
[edit]
The three Trapezium star entries that are in the Hipparcos database have incorrect data and are corrected in the Celestia star catalog file data/revised.stc. As a side effect, those three stars are all visible even when using the 2million star.dat. Thus Grant's comment in the Web file listed above is no longer correct: his Trapezium addon is equally useful for both star databases. I'll edit the page to change that comment.

It is an excellent add-on, but I would caution against using the stars themselves as locations for imaginary planetary systems. If you do use a TYC star as the location for a planetary system, then anyone downloading your system will not be able to see it unless they have the 2 Million star add-on too.

Hmmm... there is that, yeah. What I might do is include an appropriate stc file, perhaps with a txt extension, that the downloader would have to rename in order to activate, along with a recomendation to download the star database. It kills the start up time on my current computer, but the visual impact alone is worth it.
