It's been a while since I posted anything about my O'Neill Colony, so here's a couple of images showing current progress. Any comments, questions, criticisms welcome as usual.

Yes they are John.
If you have a look at the following thread you should find a few links to my website where I have some video captures of an earlier version of this design (using different textures and earlier models). One of those videos shows a view from inside one of the cylinders. Enjoy.

Thanks! I definitely look forward to this release. I've always had a love for what I call the "classic" habitats (O'Neills, Bernals, and Stanfords).

The good news is that my copy of G.K.O'Neill's
"The High Frontier" has finally been shipped (yesterday) after ordering it 2 months ago from Amazon!
The bad news is that there's still a lot of work to do on
my colony (and some depth-sorting bugs to be resolved) before it can be released. Not before the next release of Celestia at the earliest I'm afraid.

Here are some pics of a torus design I've just started working on (very early stages so please forgive the lack of nice textures). Also, Frank..I've borrowed the hub from your Space Station for the time being just for demo purposes. Hope you don't mind. (Plan is to design my own hub eventually).
Major diameter is 7km to ground level (7.5 total diameter)
Minor diameter is 500m.
This gives a strip of land 500m wide by 22km long (11sq km). To give a feeling for the size of this thing, the box you can see in the model represents a building the size of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Cape Kennedy. (160m H x 158m W x 218m L)
I've also created a video depicting a subway train travelling at 200 km/h in this habitat. You'll find it

Chuft Captain,
I trust you realize that the 2001 torus model wasn't created by Frank although his inclusion of it with the Educational Activities has provided some of its popularity.
I could be mistaken, but I believe the model on the MotherLode was originally created by Michael Powell.

The other, non-Celestia images are by NASA and Anders Sandberg. Of course a lot of people use the NASA images because they are public domain.
I haven't got the time at the moment to make new and better ones, so I am looking forward to Chuft-Captain's models.
My models are really only good for long distance shots; they doon't rotate, and have no detailing. But they are included in the OA complete add-on anyway, to give an idea of what sort of structures would be present in a mature interstellar society.

I thought I would share this image which IMO gives a real sense of the scale of an O'Neill Island III sized colony.
This shows what a habitat pair would look like from earth if you were to park them in an orbit at the same altitude as the ISS. ( Not that you'd ever actually do this!! ).
NOTE: For comparison, the little dot to the left of the O'Neill's is actually the ISS.

It's been awhile, but I've been busy.
Here's an update on progress... (some of these features may differ, or be excluded from the final version for technical reasons)
A shuttle takes it's passengers on a 4 minute 675 km/h journey past agricultural cylinders to it's final destination, the other habitat in the distance (the shuttle is likely to be replaced with a different model in the final version)
A view of the habitat from near one of it's agricultural cylinders, showing cloud banks and the lights of a small city at the far end:
A closeup view of that rudimentary city. The lights of another city at the far end of the habitat can be glimpsed through a gap in the buildings. One of the 2 other land-strips, and the agricultural cylinders outside, can be seen through the clouds.
A view of the city 20km in the distance, as seen from near land edge at the other end of the habitat:

This program has some fantastic textures for the cities (even futuristic) with lights. Otherwise, if you want, I shall post some of these for you. Your cities with the lights I think should be fantastic.

there are 4 256x256 px .PNG of some coloured lens flare without spikes as in the screenshot below (do not see at the white background, it's a .JPG)

with which to map the "windows" (copy and paste, resize the .PNG by adapting, of course). Lens flare looks great as lights for the sci-fi vessels, so, perhaps for the cities...

Not sure how you mean for these flares to be used, but thanks for the links anyway. I'm unlikely to apply these to the current buildings as they are just temporary (chosen for their "polygon efficiency" -- 10 poly's each).
Will look into such fancier features with later generation models.
