Bonsai Venus 200x

Post #1by GlobeMaker » 14.11.2005, 06:54

A 3D model of Venus was made. Its diameter is 200 times smaller than Venus, but the mountain heights were kept unchanged. This was put into orbit around Earth close to the Bonsai Earth 200x so the two planets can be compared. Here is a screen shot :

The miniature Earth is 40 miles wide and the Bonsai Venus is about 39 miles wide. These models are useful for getting a sense of proportion of mountain heights versus planetary diameters. The mountains on those two models are as tall as real mountains, but they are packed into planetesimals that are 200 times smaller than the Earth and Venus.

After looking at how small the mountains are on Bonsai Venus 200x, compared to the size of Venus (8000 miles), one understands the uselessness of making 3D models of Venus or Earth with no exaggeration of elevations. These planets are so close to being spheres that the mountain peaks are invisible at the global scale of 8000 miles.

The Bonsai Venus 200x is a 2 megabytes file in .3ds format. There are 64,000 data points on this coarse 3D model. One elevation is shown at every one degree of latitude and longitude. To make a detailed model of Venus would take a gigabyte. So this little exaggerated Venus file is being donated and copies can be distributed freely. You can get it from this link :

The ftp files are :
bonsai_venus_200x.3ds
add_to_spacecraft.ssc
bonsai_earth_200x.3ds

The add_to_spacecraft.ssc should be pasted into your spacecraft.ssc file to put the two models in orbit together near Earth. Next : Bonsai_Mars_200x.
Your wish is my command line.
