I've decided to become a productive member of the community instead of just watching and enjoying. My first attempt at an add-on was the simplest yet still important German V-2 rocket of WW2, who's apogee was at 200 miles above Earth, and was therefore well into space. I'm assuming this would be good for Celestia, if not just tell me.

Hello Sitting Duck, the V-2 rocket was the first step of astronautics history, truly important , so I'm waiting for it. :D
But the V2 has been used, as was, only for destruction purposes, with an horizontal range of 300 km (about 200 miles), enough to reach London from Germany with 1000 kg of explosive. :evil:
At the end of the WW2 many V-2 rockets were brought by US Army in USA, and many German scientists with them, including V-2 Team Supervisor Wernher Von Braun, and the result was that a smaller rocket, the WAC Corporal, was put on top of V-2, obtaining the "Bumper" rocket, which on February 1949 reached an altitude of 393 km, bringing a manmade object into space for the fist time. :wink:

One of these rockets hit the bus station at the top of the road where my parents lived; if it had fallen a couple of hundred yards further south it would have wiped them out, and I would never have been born.

They arrived much faster than sound- they gave no warning whatsoever, and at first people thought they were gas mains exploding. In fact they were sometimes called 'Flying gas mains' by the Eastenders.

Ok I have completed the model 99%, but i cant close the back for some reason. Note this is my first model ever and its not that bad. if anyone could fix that and texture it I would be very happy.

...Ok Im not sure how to put this here for Download, perhaps I can email it to you Eburacum45 or ScyBladeGhost or whoever would like to?

Unfortunately, I am forced to switch PCs every weekend, and attempts at logging in to the forums here have mysteriously falied, so I have decided to create a second account for the weekends... please treat me as the same entity as "Sitting Duck"

What I actually came here to say was that I have now completed completely my V2 rocket model and have textured it, all in anim8tor. My friend Mastermind has done some touch ups.
When exporting the model to a .3DS and then finally putting it into Celestia , the texture .jpg in the medres folder and the model in models and the SSC in extras int he V2 folder and evrything specified correctly, the texture fails to load in Celestia. It is just grey. Huh? Could I send this to someone to get the texture to work? :evil:

What is the size of your texture image?
Remember that Celestia needs it to be a power of two on a side. E.g. 512x512.

It'll be stretched to fit by the graphics card, so the pattern on the texture doesn't have to be exactly the shape that it needs to have when it's applied to the model. In other words, you can use your favorite method of rescaling images to change its size.

I remembered that there were some discussions about Historic projects (earth 1962, Mercury, Gemini and V2) in the Orbiter community http://www.ibiblio.org/mscorbit/phpBB2/index.php for example.
And some + or - detailled models avaible on Orbithangar.com, of 'course... Jeam

Hi Sitting Duck,

Try to add this line in your ssc if you haven't done it yet :

-update, adding this line did not help unfortunately

Selden, do you mean the texture needs to be a perfect square?
edit-ok i get it

Hmmm, it can be somewhat frustrating to make a model and then find a version of it has been made.
Well, at least Ill upload this one to motherlode, if I can ever get it to work.

If you're speaking about my links to the Orbiter works, don't worry: Remember this sim is about *astronautic* first when Celestia is *astronomic* first, but, as when someone wants to refresh a model (in Celestia like in Orbiter) you are right to purpose your own version.. Infos about others works -than can be old ones, and may be updated- is just to see others solutions, that can help, sometimes... (and Orbiter models are modeled to be played with the soft, this is another way to create them) Jeam

I was thinking of a way to make it less threatening while remaining historically accurate....a peace texture (however funny) somewhat clashes with the authenticity. I decided that this would be a failed V2 which managed to enter Earth orbit and never rain down and cause destruction, so it will just tumble through space forever (and point in the wrong direction! ;-) )

I didn't want you to change the texture, of course. And this flag was not particularly for your model. You're working on a real historical rocket model, and you don't have to change it. I'm sure everybody here knows what he/she is doing.

But what about using it as a tiny flag on the rocket ? :wink:
