I have a very sad news for you.

This is not a lake :-) This is a 200 m high sand hill covered by a thin layer of snow and ice.

Don't belive BBC or CNN, believe me!...

...or check original ESA press release with anaglyphs inside :-)

I find this:
http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Mars_Expres ... 8BE_0.html

For me "ice lake" and "water ice" mean the same thing even if I am not very good in english...

I think the point is that a 'lake' implies a depression filled with liquid. An 'ice lake' - or more properly a 'frozen lake' - implies such a depression filled with frozen water.

But technically this appears to be a dune field covered by ice - not a lake at all.

Not that this makes any difference to your pictures :). They seem rather dark to me, BTW - is that normal?

OK !
But, I thing it is too late to change the title of the addon in the celestia motherlode :? ...

Because I check the ambiant light in medium in Celestia.

So they're screenshots of the crater taken while it's on the nightside of Mars?!

Um, why not just take screenshots of the crater during the martian day?!

Hi fightspit!
First of all thanks for your work about the martian "lake"! :D
I have a couple of remarks to do about your add-on.
I dowloaded the jpg and the dds versions or the add-on, but only the jpg one can be used with 16k jestr VT.
In fact if you use the dds files, you can only obtain a white "rectangle" :?
Worse, the folders into which the files reside are not the same as jestr's ones, so I had to move manually the "level4"-"level7" folders from their original folder to the correct one!
It's very easy, only if you know what you are doing, but perhaps someone could have problems.
The latest remark is about the location of the lake: I had to resort to my favorite astronomical magazine to read the martian coordinates of the feature.
BTW they are 70.5N , 103E (both expressed in degrees) and they must be inserted manually into the "Go to Object" dialog box, that pops up when you go into the "Navigation/Goto Object..." menu.
Without such an info, it is veeeeeery difficult to find the lake!
In Italy we say "cercare un ago in un pagliaio" ("to look for a needle in a haystack") but in this situation I could say "cercare un lago in un pagliaio"
For non-italian people I can only say that it's a pun: the words "ago" (needle) and "lago" (lake) in italian have a similar sound ...

Bye!
Pierluigi

Ok !
I put a file location in JPG and DDS version and this add on is more easy to install.

Enjoy

No it is NOT...

What do you wish to call it now?

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Hi bob  !

Well, I am assuming to call it as the ESA said here :

http://www.esa.int/esaMI/Mars_Express/S ... 8BE_0.html

"Mars Water Ice" or something like that ?

Have you a better idea ?

Edit: And thanks you for the possibility to edit the title !

How about

Water ice at Martian North Pole?

Why not, it is more complete.

So go on for "Water ice at Martian North Pole", thanks bob !

I am going to edit the title of this post.
