I finished today a new version of Kubrick's Discovery model. I based my work on the previous version (available on the Motherlode), but I had to rebuilt almost everything from scratch. Some pictures of the model :

Any comment, opinion AND crittics are welcome here.

Ah, one of the coolest ships ever made in sci-fi, in one of the cooler universes as well.

My Favourite spaceship in sci-fi, the USSS Discovery I, famous for the US mission Jupiter 1999-2001 and the US-USSR Mission Jupiter 2010-2015...

I just installed the model on a eMac, here at the place where I work. There isn't any antialiasing on this system and I noticed how terribly ugly the model is looking here ! All those pixels and "hard" jaggies are untolerable !!

How many of you have antialiasing ? The difference is so strong, I can't believe my eyes ! Antialising should be a standard option on ALL modern computers. It's really a shame it isn't.

If you don't have antialiasing, you should try the model on a computer with antialiasing. The difference is striking !

Very NICE... I don't suppose the link to the pod is available anywhere (I'm not sure when I missed that one)?

I'll make a pack Discovery-pod in my Motherlode release, maybe nextweek, especially since I made some unpublished corrections to the pod itself.

Really cool 8O

And beautifull background. It reminds me 2010's meeting with Discovery.

I'll like to know the modeller that you uses to create as many details (in addition to your gift  )
I use wings, it's a small and easy tool, but although i found some detailed photos (http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/2001ref.htm or http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/2001int.htm#disc, http://p197.ezboard.com/fatomiccityfrm34.showMessage?topicID=1.topic), I did not have time (or patience :? ) to model them.

Bye

Thanks a lot for the links ! :)

I'm using a Mac specific 3D modeler : Cheetah3D, not available on Windows. It's a powerfull tool, but it can't be compared with the 3D modeler ElChristou is using (Amapi pro).

I just discovered some glitches on parts of my model, so I'll update the link later this weekend. People may still download the preliminary model for testing, from the link I provided, however. Take note that the final Discovery (and its pod) will be announced here and be sent to the Motherlode.

Cham,

It's a lot better than the other two I have.

Of course, it'd be nice if the windows were a little more transparent so the inside can be seen :)

The windows were made semi-transparent on purpose. Because the interior is *very* crude and not acccurate at all. I made them the way they are just to "feel" the inside, without seeing the "crudiness" of the model. In the movie, the real command room is *very* complicated, and there is no way I can do it accurately (I'm no ElChristou :) )

Great model indeed :D
But I have had problems with the pod.
There is complete unconsistency in the naming of the model, the content of the .ssc file, the names of the textures in the .3ds file and the ones in the medres folder.

Please Windows and Mac guys, think about Linux where all names that refer each other must be exactly the same otherwise it won't work.

Pod1 is not the same as pod1, Pod1.3DS is not the same as pod1.3ds and hal_eye.jpg is not Hal_Eye.JPG, etc.

We Linux users are at a pain with most of the add-ons and have to put everything back at it should be for them to work (sometimes dozens textures to rename for a single add-on).

I am not complaining, but I think some kind of warning notice should be made sticky so that creators are well aware of the issue.
Hummm Selden?
:D

Unfortunately, having too many stickys is self-defeating. People just ignore them.

I've added it as FAQ #26 in the Preliminary User's FAQ (a sticky near the top of the Users Forum) and as a posting in the Announcement at the top of the Addons Forum.

I'll correct the file name unconsistencies today for the pod.

Yep, thank you on behalf of the penguins :D
I have had myself some problem occasionally with batch processing in PSP.
One plugin insisted on putting the file extensions in uppercase.
Really a pain when textures names are lowercase in the 3d model.
Ideally and as a rule of thumb, all names (models, textures, and reference to them in ssc and other files) should be in lowercase, without any space or special characters which may mean different things in different operating systems, only exception being the underscore sign as standard separator.

Okay, I've just updated the Discovery AND its pod. This should be the final version, and I'm about to upload the pack to the Motherlode. However, I need some testers in case there are some problems. Here's a link to the complete package. It's a 11 MB download :

Please, let me know if there's any problem.
