add-ons look like "DWER@%FG&!DS???„?????GSDFWERS???

Hello
Im new to Ceslestia and I think its great. I've started downloading addons. Some of them work with the images and labels and displayed, ubt some work with the label displayed but no image and some diplay the label but where the image should be is a load of low relolution GOBBLE-DE-GOOK. Ive checked the bad downloads with the ones that work and the all the files are present and in the correct folders and the the reference to the mesh in the .dsc file is also correct, Im dumbfounded!

I am on a Mac G3 500Mhz and my graphics card is a 16Mb ATY,Rage128Pro2

Also I would like to ask how to right click on a planet to get the textures menu up because it does'nt work.

thanks in advance

David

The symptoms you describe usually mean that Celestia couldn't read the surface texture image file. It could be because the image file is corrupted or it could be because Celestia simply can't find it.

Under Windows, you can type a tilde to see Celestia's console log, which often includes relevant error messages, but often doesn't.

A relatively thorough list of the possible causes of this problem can be found at http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html#6

David...can you point to a couple of specifics so we can check stuff our end...It could be a problem with winzip for the macintosh which is causing these problems. It would be great if we could compile these as .sit files for our mac orientated friends.

Regards...bh.

bh...i dont think that i have winzip installed on my computer but i think that the finder app has a plugin of some sort that archives/unarchives files when i open the images that dont work the preview app they are displayed correctly.

i have a stuffit dropbox which compresses the files into .sit format and if you want i could compress all the files in the celestia motherlode for other mac users

thanks a lot

I'm new to Celestia as well and have experienced the same thing. I run WinXP (SP2) though, not Mac OS. I have succesfully (and without any problems) added other Nebula so its not anything that I am doing....the .3ds file is in the models directory and the .dds file is in the textures/medres directory. The .dsc file looks fine and calls for the correct .3ds file as the "mesh". Here is the phenomenon that he speaks of:

If they are simply bad files then Celestiamotherlode needs some cleaning up to do.

i get a wierd bug that it displays wrong textures on some of the models i got from Celestiamotherlode, as in a satelite might have my large earth texture pasted all over it like 100 times, heh, starts to slow stuff down at bit as you can imagine.

These problems usually are caused because Celestia can't read the surface texture images for some reason. Please read http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html#6
It includes a long list of possibilities.
