A few more OA planets

Post #1by eburacum45 » 24.07.2004, 20:08

As soon as I have ironed out the bugs, these planets will be available at the Motherlode

Incidentally, I had to add an extra star to represent Psi Serpentis, which is wrongly shown in Celestia as 578 light years away;

I have written this replacement .stc

802803 "Psi Serp"
{
RA 236.007 # Star for Daffy; replaces erroneous Psi Serpentis in the Celestia Database
Dec 2.5155
Distance 47.86
SpectralType "G5v"
AbsMag 5.03
}

which is close enough for me...

Daffy is the second planet down in the post above.

Okay; thanks to the Celestia Motherlode the next batch of Orion's Arm planets are available;

http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/creators/sbowers/
thank you very much for hosting them by the way.

the first three were already there, and you have to separate the .ssc and .stc files to put in the /extras file in celestia; then separate the textures and put them in the /textures/medres file yourself;

for addon 4 and 5 I realised that you can make a self-contained file to download into the /extras file; so these two just need to be extracted straight into /extras.

All these planets and moons are small files, and are best seen from syncronous orbit.

But of course I forgot to put a readme file in;

to find these planets (once you have installed them) you could try these

As always your worlds are very nice...Im suprised no one has commented on them so far...

On another note...

I still think that worlds could be highly accented with terrain generation of sorts.

Models work but are far too time consuming to add to the entire planet...

Other than that I would like to see a little more excitement on the planets surface...Maybe fog enhanced with the haze setting?

Thank you Rassilon; although your own multilayered planets are far superior. I hope that these simple images suffice to show the general character of the world. Right click on them for a link to the planet in OaA by the way...
Do you mean 3D terrain, provided by a generator?
your own Drwho universe project has something of that sort, doesn't it?
I am sure this will all come to pass, before long.

My graphics card doesnt display bump maps or specular reflections, although I have included black and white specular maps; if anyone wants, would they like to capture an image of the specular reflection on one of tghe workds (say Darwin) to see if it is worth doing (I'm kinda working in the dark here)

I could do that at some point...I tend to do this with addons that dont provide these features in the first place...sometimes...for my own amusement...

That DOES look nice! A shame my card doesn't support these either. Still, I'm working on getting a G Force 4 (trying to remember the name of a card that was recomended... I know almost nothing about this aspect!) for our 1Ghz computer. If I can accomplish this sometime soon, then I think I might actually be able to use Celestia to its full glory!

A card based on Nvidia's FX5200 is $50-$100 (depending on options) and will show all current Celestia eye-candy. Cards higher in the FX5x00 seris are faster (FX5950 is ~2x the 5200) but don't show more in Celestia.

GF4 Ti 4x00 cards cost slightly more and do slightly less than the 5x00 cards: they show poorer shadows.

A card based on Nvidia's 6800 chipset will be "future proof" for longer, but they cost $250-$500 and use a lot of power. Hopefully cheaper versions will be available before Christmas.

Avoid cards based on the MX version of the GF3 and GF4 chipsets: they can't show ring shadows.

Specturals and bumps do make a big difference. I notice mine look flat and featureless without all the extra eye-candy...

Heres another of yours...

http://celestialvisions.net/pics/deu.jpg

btw I paid only 200 american for my 5900 FX You could get a lower end 4600 for probably under 100...

Also I recommend not compressing your images at all...This will increase your detail...

Yeah, I'm using an older Nvidia TNT2 32mb card. But the problem is, the drivers were intended for Win 98, not 2000, and the 2000 drivers that are available now, as far as I can tell, do not allow the card to fully function. I can't get ring shadows and can't view anything above 2k, never mind no bump or specular maps stuff.

Mind you, I'm still having a ton of fun with Celestia, but my maps are geared towards what I can see, so I'm sure most people would consider them kind of, well, flat :?

Ah well, gimme a few and I'll have a good system, and then I'll REALLY play!

I have made a new Orion's Arm Yahoo Group, especially for making new worlds and spacecraft for the Orion's arm scenario;
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OA-Celestia
but we will be sharing hints and tips about models, textures and scripting, and making a relatively realistic simulated universe, so you don't need to be heavily into OA as such.

I have also been working on a Celestia-heavy website giving a quick tour around Orion's Arm as it stands now; this is it (apologies for th 50megs advertsments)
