2001 space station textures

There's a nice model of the space station of 2001 a space odyssey at this site :

http://www.strafe.com/2001/

It has a full texture set. But I can't make it to work properly in Celestia. I get a space station with textures all messed up. Can you check this ?

I want BAD this space station with all its textures !!

Cham,

I got the space station working fine on my XP. Which one are you trying to use?

The 3ds version is what I've gotten on my poor machine, and like I said - it works just fine. Do you have all of the texture elements located in your medres directory?

Also, I noticed that the full-texture version's model is a "max" model whatever that is. Don't think Celestia can use that format.

Maybe you can convert it to 3ds?

Just a thought.

Take care, Bob

I downloaded both the full texture version (for the textures) and the 3D Studio R4 version. I placed the textures in a medres folder, etc. The space station appears with strange colors and the textures doesn't show.

Cham,

I think that the problem lies with the full-texture format. A max file just cannot be used in Celestia as far as I know. The R4 version is the one I downloaded and installed (without any textures) - and again, it works fine. If you're trying to use the textures from the full version, maybe they're just conflicting with the 3ds model somehow.

Sorry, just don't know enough about how the textures are related to the models.

Anyway, maybe someone with superior knowledge will jump in here and help you out. Try Mr. Jestr...

I already have a good 2001 space station from elswhere, without any textures. It's working perfectly, except it's all nude (no textures).

I want a space station with full textures.

Quite some time ago Frank Gregorio had a Celestia Addon on his site http://www.fsgregs.org/celestia/ which included both the 2001 space station and the Orion spacecraft.

It's not there now, but I suspect it'll be available again as part of one of his Spacecraft Activities. Maybe you can persuade him to make it available separately sooner?

I join my request to yours so that Frank separately makes available also some from addons especially created or improved for the Activities: I had not seen that the "2001" pack was more available to the address only I quoted in my catalogue. I hope to correct soon with a new one 8) Concerning the station V, the model running in Activity 7.2 is improved compared to that of the "2001" pack, and incorporates the positioning of a version of Orion (customized "Celestia") in approach of the station (positioning which I had read on the forum a long time ago, IIRC, but had lost... ) Great!

Cham...can you mail me the textures?...I used to have this model in orbit a while ago, but after a few upgrades I've forgotten about it. I still have the 3ds though. Textures for models in Celestia have to be a certain 'ratio' type size...I've done this with the shuttle so it 'should' be possible!

If you've got a image editing program like PaintShop Pro or PhotoShop you can do it yourself...usually 128X128...256X256...and so on...

Hope this helps...

regards...bh.

In what format are your files ? I get .ace files !?!?

Can you present them in a standard format, please ?

Tou will need an ace file extractor. If you read the instruction on the Web Site it will direct you to http://www.winace.com where you can get a freeware extractor called xace plus.

Very nice texture, indeed ! I've thrown out my old spaceship ;-) I've watched again the movie to compare with the original Station V, and I must admit this one is so realistic...

Thanks.

Brendan

Instead of using a format like .ace, which isn't very well known (I haven't heard of it before anyway) you might consider using zip, rar, tar etc.. Something which has more multiplatform support (To help out those poor unfortunate Mac users  ), and is a bit better known..

I've solved my Ace problem. I've found a small program to unace on the Mac.

What about Discovery, full texturised ? Anyone has a realistic version of the Discovery spaceship with textures ?

OK Guys, you talked me into it.

I have put onto my website, all of the textured models from 2001, a Space Odyssey that I have. They include the big space station V (with the Celestia 1 and without it), plus Discovery in orbit around Io, a pod near the podbay door of Discovery, and a Moonbus orbiting the Moon. To see them, you have to go forward in time to the year 2510. You can always change that by editing their ssc files to remove the "Beginning" date.

The models are textured. The 3ds version I have of the big station is good, but it does not have ALL of the textures that are available for the 3ds model. There is a website somewhere that has a 3ds model with lots of textures, but they are not sized in powers of 2 and Celestia won't display them. Anyway, check out the add-ons. If you have a model that has more textures than these and work in Celestia, please let me know and I'll host them on my site.

My website is at http://www.fsgregs.org/celestia

Regards,

Frank

There is a program called MacUnace 2.5 (136kb) available on the Winace site which I think should do the trick for Mac users.

I use the ACE format simply to save space. As of 20/2/2004 the total ACE format downloads on my site amount to 14.1MB. The Zip equivalent is approx 20.2MB. My site is limited to 20MB.

Please let me know if the MacUnace program above works ok. If not I will look @ other options.

Flight Path

I think it would be cool if, when you choose the years 2000 or 2001, you could see Discovery on it's flight, on the way to TMA-2. It might also be cool to add the Tycho dig and the Clavius Base...

This is my favorite add-on, BTW! Thanks!

Thanks to all you guys for upgrading the models. The Space Station V, Orion space plane, and Discovery are now greatly textured. I have upgraded the zip file on my website to include them, along with a Pod from the Discovery, plus the Monolith in orbit around Jupiter and the Moonbus in orbit around the Moon. Thanks again folks from all us Celestia users.

Frank,

Thanks for your efforts on these models. Since my XP Theme is basically all about 2001, I appreciate the textures/models immensely. :)

By the way, thanks also for all of your hard work on those educational activities. I've downloaded a few of them, but have thus far not had time to start on one. (Been busy trying to learn Lua.) Whew! I'm gonna kill Harald if I ever see him.

Take care, Bob
