Adding an atmosphere to Crab PSR NP0532/HIP 333340

Post #1by Cham » 08.02.2004, 06:51

I installed the Crab pulsar addon NP0532/HIP 333340. It's nice, but it lacks some realism without any glowing. I want to add an atmosphere to this pulsar, but I'm unable to make it to work.

The crab pulsar.ssc file contains only this code :

"Crab Pulsar" "HIP 333340"
{
Mesh "psr1257.3ds"
Emissive true
Radius 80000
# orbital data
EllipticalOrbit {
Period 1000
SemiMajorAxis 0.0
Eccentricity 0.0
Inclination 0.0
}

RotationPeriod 0.00004
Albedo 1

}

When I add an atmosphere, it doesn't show. Is it possible or is there a limitation of Celestia ?

You can't put an atmosphere in a mesh(your pulsar is a mesh)... only in planets/moons...

ElPelado,

Well, you can, but It may cause Celestia to crash. I'm trying to characterize the bug now. I really think it ought to work.

Cham,

Where did you get your NP0532 Addon? The only pulsar Addon that I have does not include its own 3DS model.

I found two great pulsars with models here :

http://63.224.48.65/~rassilon/

The third one, the one I'm talking about, well, I can't remember. :cry:

Selden, what is your pulsar ? Where can I find it ?

There's not enough pulsar to my taste in my Celestia folder !

(Geez, Celestia makes me like a little kid !!!)

Cham,

I only have the pulsar that Rassilon created using comets, so you must already have it. I'll look at his Web page again for the other one.

We should be able to put a glow on the pulsar, because the other pulsars I installed (PSR B1620/HIP 465000 and PSR 1257) have a nice star glow.

In the M1 crab nebula stc file, there is this definition for NP0532/HIP 333340 :

# HIP 333340
333340 "NP0532" {
RA 83.6332083
Dec 22.01447222
Distance 6300.0000
SpectralType "T9V"
AppMag 70.00 # Radii: 164.730741232034
}

In the Crab pulsar .ssc file, only this :

"Crab Pulsar" "HIP 333340"
{
Mesh "psr1257.3ds"
Emissive true
Radius 80000
# orbital data
EllipticalOrbit {
Period 1000
SemiMajorAxis 0.0
Eccentricity 0.0
Inclination 0.0
}

RotationPeriod 0.00004
Albedo 1

}

Where should I add something to give the pulsar a glow like the others ?

Very very strange ! In the above data, I just changed the line

AppMag 70.00 # Radii: 164.730741232034

to this line :

AppMag 20

And guess what ? It gave me a super giant brown dwarf (default red texture) with a nice red glow ! What the ... ?

Okay, I changed the spectral type to SpectralType "R0VI" and it gave me a red star, with the pulsar deep inside it.

I'm rediscovering the spectral types. The lines

SpectralType "T9V"
AppMag 70.00 # Radii: 164.730741232034

appears to be very important. But I don't know how to edit them so the pulsar takes a nice white glow.

I almost got it to work. After many experimentations, I edited the star definition to this :

#SpectralType "T9V" #(original data in this addon)
#AppMag 70.00 # Radii: 164.730741232034 #(original data)
SpectralType "Q0V"
AppMag 27.5

Now, the pulsar has a nice white glow, but as soon as I get relatively close to it, it suddenly change to a full white star, without any pulsar texture. I have the same problem with the PSR 1257 addon. It's a mix between a red star and a pulsar. When I get relatively close to it, I lost one of the two. Is there a way out of this ?

How can we select a star texture ?
