I have recently finished a bit more of my virtual Earth texture and now have most of the south of England up to level10(though not SE England),and tried putting a model of Stonehenge in the right place.
Here are the results & addon to download -
http://jestraddons.250free.com/index.html
If you want to download my VT(levels 6-10) to go with it go to-
ftp://celestia:addons@81.111.74.239
Obviously it is better with virtual texture up to level10,if you just want the level10 tile with Stonehenge in it is 'tx_1013_220'.All the best Jestr.Ps I cant get link to FTP site working here,if you type it in to your browser it should work though or click on the link in my '64k Blue Marble' post

Today I have altered both the model and ssc file in my download to match in with the texture better and align better with the sun, so if you have downloaded it already you might want to download again from the web site above ( would be quicker),all the best Jestr

hi
jestr. I would really like to have your level 6-10 VT but I seem to have a problem with the download: I'm using DAP (as a download manager; the only way through dial-up

to get the zip file from
ftp://81.108.221.84/BlueMarble%20DDS/levels6-10.zip, but the result is a 31,4k corrupted zip file. Where could be the problem be?

DAP i'd say... Not only is it sucky, but it's sucky with Ads. I hope you haven't got the paid version, because you can get a much better piece of FREE software called Star Downloader here:
http://www.stardownloader.com/ (i'm sure there are better ones, but I personally like this one)
As long as you don't pause during the download, you'll have no problems.
Set it up so the file is split into about 50 pieces, and set a long timeout period too. Good luck!

I've tried StarDownloader but no luck! In ie or Rhinosoft ftp Voyager when I copy (drag) a file I get an error message, and the resulting file is corrupted (and smaller in size than the original). Now the ftp site dosen't work at all.

you can find "fresh downloads", it's free...

DO NOT use FreshDevices (downloader) on WinXP!!! I don't know how or what it does, but it hacks into RPC (windows process) and overloads the CPU. The only solution of getting rid of it is a format of the primary partition.
PS. jestr, I can't get any more connected on the ftp (is this 81.108.221.84 the corect IP?)

The Ip is correct but for some reason lately the FTP program keeps turning off,I check it every few hours but sometimes its OK and others off.Just keep trying (midnight to 6am GMT is usually a good time this is when I'm working on my computer)Cheers Jestr

I use LeechFTP. Which works great for resuming both HTTP and FTP downloads.
I think the author now publishes some more robust DL client, but I remember not liking it for some reason.
Umm...whoops.

Hi folks. Relatively new to posting here, and definitely new to Celestia and its intricacies....
I just input this new Mimas, following the instructions in the readme. The Mimas looks and works great (I tend to sacrifice smoothness of motion for the great eye candy), but for some reason the rest of the Solar System beyond Saturn has dissapeared! It is all still there in the proper ssc file, so I'm at a loss.
It really isn't a problem, per se. I downloaded the light version (I'm stuck with a 56k modem here at home, though I'll be loading everything on another computer with a T1 line after Christmas), and so I plan to download the higher resolution items later on. I was just curious what the source of the problem might be so that I don't repeat it later on.
Thanks in advance for what is likely to be a bonehead error on my part!

Dollan,
Your symptoms suggest that you made a typo when you made the changes for the new Mimas. Look carefully at how its definition ends and how the next declaration begins.
Mimas should end with a }
The next entry should be its AltSurface definition.

Hi Seldon...
I did a direct cut and paste from the accompanying readme file. however, I looked anyway, and I see that the last line of the definition is:
Albedo 0.5
}
Should the bracket be on the same line as the Albedo entry? Should there be a space between the bracket, and the beginning of the Altsurface line?
Thanks for your help!
Oh, and to the creator of Mimas: I also downloaded your Stonehenge (which is why this question ended up here to begin with), and it is absolutely wonderful!

John,
I just downloaded jestr's version of Mimas, and "it works fine for me."
I'd suggest restoring your original copy of solarsys.ssc. Instead of inserting all the new text that jestr provided, make only one change. Insert the line
Mesh "mimas.3DS"
just after the first { in the definition for Mimas.
The result should look like this:
Code: Select all
"Mimas" "Sol/Saturn"
{
Mesh "mimas.3DS"
Texture "mimas.*"
To answer your question, though: no, a space is not needed between the closing brace "}" and the AltSurface keyword. Even most ends-of-lines aren't needed. Except when they terminate comment lines or act as breaks between arguments and keywords, line terminators actually are irrelevant in SSC files. They're primarily there for readability and usually can be replaced by just a space character. In this case, though, the closing brace acts as a separator and no additional separator (cr-lf or space or tab) is actually needed.
And if you didn't keep a backup copy of solarsys.ssc, you can download just that file from
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/celestia/celestia/data/solarsys.ssc
Select the "download" option.

Hi Jestr,
that is magnificent, a superb model.
Selden kindly pointed me here and after a few false starts ( page not found on the above site and overbandwidth allocation on your other (0catch ?was it) site) I eventually downloaded it with my LeechFTP freeware. IExplorer had a brave attempt but kept getting disconnected from you and didnt want to 'resume' always went back to the start. Leech was able to resume and completed OK.
So, all we need now is for Celestia to support shadows on models and a bit of precession and maybe nutation and we could see what our forfathers saw
thanks,
Malcolm.
