Stars and Star Addon

Post #1by Predator » 15.10.2003, 01:13

I have recently discovered one big ass star with the HIP code of 53085. It has a radius of --

935.49RSun

If anyone has found any stars larger than this please tell me. I am interested in massive stars. Has anyone ever thought about doing an addon for The pistol Star??? that would be sweet. Thanx

BillyBob!!! Shame on you. What star is that, anyway? I am writing a new Celestia Educational Activity about the life cycle of stars, and I want to take my students to that sucker. Its name, please..... :)

Thanks

Whoa! Best keep them away from that one - it's so big it looks like a Celestia artefact rather than a real star.
Take them to VV Cep (Hip 108317) or Mu Cep instead - although Celestia underestimates their true sizes, they're still both listed at over 1000 solar radii. (Unfortunately, as well as not knowing VV Cep's name, Celestia lists it as a red dwarf ... Think I'll go and edit stars.dat.)

You need to understand the data structure, and then write your own editor.
The data structure is explained on this thread.

This page has the formats for the ssc, stc, xyz files as well as stars.dat. Don't worry about the galaxies.dat, it has been replaced by dsc files. The ssc, stc and dsc files are text files so you can edit them in text editors. You could do the same with xyz files, but normally they are generated from preexisting data.
With the newer prereleases, the star name can be put into the stc files. Here is an update to the example on the web page:

Code: Select all

300001 "Sirius B" {

        RA 101.2886

        Dec -16.71314306

        Distance 8.601223

        SpectralType "D"

        AppMag 15

        }
