I am a newbie to both Celestia and this Forum. I have downloaded the zip files for both Jupiter and Neptune Rings from Praesepe's Page.
http://www.la-guarida.com/Celestia/inde ... de0001.htm
I have edited the solarsys.scc files for both and saved same. I have copied the png files to the hires, lores and medres folders (to be on the safe side). Still I do not see the Rings of Jupiter or Neptune. If I try to look at the png files with my Windows Picture and Fax viewer, I see two horizontal parallel lines across the screen, with nothing between the lines. Any suggestions?
My version of Celestia is 1.3.1pre11, my graphics card Intel Exreme Graphics Controller (64 MB memory), WinXP Home, 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron.
Have gone through all of Selden's Introduction to Add-ons with the help of Selden.

That's about all you will see - the lines are actually the frame Picture and Fax Viewer puts around the image. The image itself is just a near-transparent grey stripe representing a transect of the rings.
Two possibilities occur to me:
1) The rings are very faint and you might miss them if the contrast on your monitor isn't set correctly.
2) Your edit to solarsys.ssc may have an error in it somewhere.

Try posting the relevant text from your solarsys.ssc here, and folk might be able to spot a problem.

My edits to the solarsys.scc:

# 2002 Jupiter Rings
{
Inner 9200
Outer 221000
Texture "jupiter-rings.png"
}

# 2003 Neptune Rings
{
Inner 41900
Outer 62983
Texture "neptune-rings.png"
}
I will try adjusting the contrast on my monitor, and clean my eyeglasses!

O.K. I think I see them on Neptune. Adjusting the ambient light helped some. As for Jupiter, I'll just have to keep looking. There are so many rings around Jupiter in the first place. And if the rings are quite faint, they must be very difficult to distinguish.

Ah-ha. You need the word "Rings" in there as part of your definitions.

Code: Select all

# 2002 Jupiter Rings
Rings {
Inner 9200
Outer 221000
Texture "jupiter-rings.png"
}

Code: Select all

# 2003 Neptune Rings
Rings {
Inner 41900
Outer 62983
Texture "neptune-rings.png"
}

Grant,
Thank you for the help. I have made the corrections to my edit. Is this what I am supposed to see in Neptune, what appears like cloud streaks?

I don't know if I got this right?

A good way to view the Neptune rings is like so:

1. Goto & Follow the voyager 2 spacecraft
2. When you start getting near to neptune, "track" and zoom in on triton. (I mean adjust the FOV, not physically go to triton)
3. A few minutes (real time) before triton passes behind neptune, you will see two very faint streaks pass between you and neptune/triton. These are the rings. You may need to repeat this a number of times before you spot them!

Pictures of neptune had to be "overexposed" to show the rings in the first place, since they're so faint.

I'm not a great fan of using other people's cel urls, since I end up having to reset my defaults, but there isn't much point on this occasion - I'm going to see what's visible in my Celestia, not yours, so we'll be no further forward ...

I think if you're not convinced, the rings probably aren't there.
Couple more things:
1) Have you embedded the ring definitions within the planet definitions, as Star Lion shows?
2) I guess the "rings" you've already got around Jupiter are orbits - try simplifying the view by turning these off with the O key.

I finally see the rings on both Jupiter and Neptune. Thanks to all who have responded, Jack, Grant, Star Lion. What was I doing wrong? I really don't know. All I know is that I had messed up my Celestia file to a point where Neptune and Jupiter had disappeared from my Solar System Browser. Fortunately I had a backup. In starting over from scratch I guess I was able to avoid the mistakes I had done previously. :D
