The Hubble´s Variable Nebula
The Hubble?s Variable Nebula
In Celestia, the name of NGC2261 is displayed, but I can?t select it and when I write its name in the Find target,Celestia don?t recognize. What I did wrong?I put 3ds in the models folder, the png image in the med res folder and the stc in the Extras
Daniel,
Computers do what you tell them to do, not what you want them to do.
When you report problems, you have to report exactly what you did. You must be careful not to make errors in the report. Otherwise we cannot know what you told the computer to do.
Psykotic is getting upset because you're being careless in your reports and not telling us the correct information. We can't tell when you're making mistakes in the reports or mistakes in what you did. You also are not reporting some of the things you have to do to make things work, so, again, we don't know if you didn't do them or simply didn't mention them.
For example, Astroboy's model of NGC2261 has no STC file. it has a DSC file. If you're using an STC file you found somewhere, then it can't work for NGC2261. If you installed a DSC file, you need to say that's what you installed.
Astroboy's model of NGC2261 is the only model of NGC2261 that I know about.
When you install Astroboy's model of NGC2261, it does not tell Celestia to display an object named NGC2261. It uses a different name entirely. So Celestia cannot show you that name as a result of that addon. If you are seeing that name, then either you installed some different addon or something else is showing you that name, not Celestia.
I'm guessing what you saw was the name of the DSC file being shown to you by Windows, not by Celestia. If so, you didn't notice that the name of the DSC file is not just "NGC2261". It is "NGC2261 (Hubble's Variable Nebula).dsc" This difference is very important.
Whenever you install an addon, you need to look into the catalog files that it uses to find out what the names of its objects really are. The author might have made a spelling error. Or he might have given the addon zip file a name which is quite different from the name of the object that he defined in the catalog file.
Astroboy likes to use long descriptive names for the objects that are defined in his DSC files. He doesn't use the identifier numbers that are used in astronomical catalogs. When you've installed his NGC2261 addon, it creates the object "Hubble's Variable Nebula". It does not create the object "NGC2261". When you want Celestia to show it to you, you have to type in the name "Hubble's Variable Nebula" (without the quotes).
Does this clarify things?

The Hubble?s Variable Nebula
Well,I unzip the ngc 2261 file from Astroboy and put the dsc file in the extras folder inside the extras folder.I put the png image in the med res and the 3ds in the models folder.I have a copy of the dsc file;i don?t know if it could be the problem. In Celestia window, the Hubble?s Variable Nebula is displayed but not its texture. In the select object label,I tried to put "Hubble?sVariableNebula","Hubble?s Variable" or "Hubble?s Variable Nebula",toggle OK BUT IT DIDN?T GO ANYWHERE!
In the other hand,I put "Owl nebula" and it go to the exact target.
How could be,since I get both files in the same homepage(Astroboy)?
Again,I am using Celestia 1.3.0,Windows XP,Athlon XP 1800,Geforce 4 MX 440 SE with 44.03 Nvidia driver and the some of objects instaled are eagle nebula, orion nebula, trifid nebula,M4,dumbell,rosetta.
What I did wrong?
Tell me if you nedd more information

Yes,but until now there aren?t any problem.Inside the Extras folder, there is a Model folder,a textures folder,a data folder,an Addons folder and a extras folder(maybe you can consider a extras subfolder)I don?t know how but someway it was created this way.Well, inside the Extras "subfolder",I have dsc,stc and ssc files. For example, the near.ssc,M4.ssc,V380.stc,psr1257.stc,M97(Owl Nebula).dsc,NGC2261(Hubble?s Variable Nebula).dsc;maybe the problem will be with this last file because it doesn?t indicate your size below.M97 and other dsc has a 1KB below.
If it helps,I can say that V380 and PSR1257 don?t work too, although I have put the files png or jpg in the med res folder and the 3ds files in the models folder.
What I have to do?Reinstall?

well if you put an ssc code file into the Original root of the Extras folder.
the Accompanying files (like models and texture) should be put into the original root of the Models and Textures/Medres folders that are in the root of Celestia.
But if you use a subfolder inside the Extras folder.
then all the files should go into that subfolder too
Like this...
Extras/Subfolder/Addon.ssc
Extras/Subfolder/models/Addon.3ds
Extras/Subfolder/Textures/medres/Addon.jpg
But as far as im aware, there should only be one Data folder
and that should be the original one in the root directory of Celestia
Hope this helps you.

Still don?t work.I will try to reinstall the nebula.
But anyway,in the "Select Object",how I put Hubble?s Variable Nebula.Like this? With any space? It appears that tha nebula is there, but Celestia didn?t recognize the words I put.For example,if I type "ring nebula",it go directly to this nebula. But it?s not working only with the Hubble`s Variable...

Daniel,
The name you type to Celestia must be exactly what is in the DSC file: spaces, apostrophes, dashes, whatever.
Celestia v1.3.1pre9 will show you the names of the objects which match what you've typed so far.
You might consider editing the DSC file and changing the name to something simpler.
