Thank you !! I also made the model. I made it for Orbiter originally, but I wanted to see how it looked in Celestia. :D

BTW I am a different Don.

Wow...nice model Don!...I really like the tiles around the nose section...bloody great. Have you a doors open version? I guess Orbiter users will get this.

I also like the window frames...they look spot on to me...I would like to add these to the model I've been working on.

TERRIER has produced an excellent model of the 'Canadarm' although just stowed version for now... have you had a look at this one?

Regards...bh.

PS. I've quite fancied having a go with Orbiter...but I'm completley crazy about Celestia! I do miss flying around the Isle of Wight in my Spitfire though!

You really should try Orbiter. That's where the Shuttle model really shines. You can view the Launch and when you get into orbit, you can open the doors and use the Canada arm to grapple a satellite (such as the LDEF I made) and deploy it in space.

Don...I guess to get your orbiter model into Celestia you must have converted to 3ds? If so...can we have it. I know it's a bit of a cheeky request...but I'm a bit cheeky myself!

Nasa must be rethinking it's policy right now...corporate manslaughter?

A fantastic vehicle...will it ever fly again?

Regards...bh.

PS. if they ban the apostropy I'm done!

Kickass model & texturing Don- id love to see that in celestia!

Wasn't the LDEF really damaged when they got it back?

The CAIB report blames everyone, so looks like they're just saying everyone should be seriously  ...

It will definitely fly again, but only to the ISS. I think they'll probably use a delta or something to stick a propulsion module on to hubble (they'll think of a way if lives could be at risk) and theres a chance they might use a Soyuz to service it if they really need to!

The CAIB report actually reccomends to keep the shuttle going for a while yet, otherwise the ISS will be completely screwed...

BUT, when the OSP comes along, we'll have a whole new spacecraft to model! :D

Thanks for the nice comments. I would like to make my model available for Celestia, and I see some great models, of satellites here, that were launched from the Shuttle. I would love to have some of them to put into Orbiter. Maybe we could make a deal.

Someone took my Magellan model (The one as it was being launched from the shuttle) and put it into orbiter ages ago.... I never heard back from them about how it went though, and I haven't been able to find it online- anyone know did this ever get finshed or what it looks like?

Hello Don... there's stacks of models here you could use for Orbiter...I'm sure. Jacks got loads of Earth Orbit crarft and others...

I've been working...with others ...to finally get a decent shuttle model ready for Celestia users for almost six months now...and it's almost there. Yours looks much better.

I will be sorry to see my model go...but there you go.

It was the only model I wanted to see in Celestia...I was surprised that it wasn't there when I started!

Many regards...bh.

Well, I have been busy and have not yet managed to put your IUS/Magellan stack in ORBITER. BTW, I took a look at the IUS and it lacks the second stage engine bell. Is it OK if I add it to your model Jack?
I got some time today and I will try integrate it with ORBITER. And Jack since you seems to be very good at 3D models, would an stowed TDRSS on an IUS mesh be too much to ask? It was the first IUS payload deployed by the Space Shuttle.

[EDIT]
After converting the main IUS_Magellan 3ds file I noticed that the faces/points numbers were huge!
Total points = 36120
Total faces = 22206

Jack, any way to reduce these numbers on the meshes? Since ORBITER aimes at medium and low-end computers and low/medium resolution meshes would be great!

1. Yeah no problem you can add in the second stage engine. I didn't put it in, because we don't have any xyz for Magellan en route to venus, where it would be visible... (no, I don't think we ever WILL either- and i'm not looking)

2. I'll see what I can do about the TDRSS model... I'm back at school now, but I *might* be able to get it done over the weekend if I can find some good pics. Anyone suggest some good links?!

3. I could make a lo-res version of Magellan + IUS if you want... That'd be easier than the TDRS anyway! Is the large face count just my model without anything added...? It shows up perfectly in celestia, it's actually one of the medium-small size models... Actually to be quite honest it could look a bit crap if I made it any more basic than it is... :? What do you think- should I try making a lo-res model anyway?

1: Thanks for the permission.

2: I'll see if I can dig something up. I suggest you try searching for TDRSS over at the KSC Media Gallery.

3: After some closer inspections I have reached the conclusion that it is the Magellan model that adds the most to the faces/points count. Any way to reduce complexity on small stuff? Every kB scrapped of the meshes means about an 1-3 FPS increase in ORBITER. So even if you only manage to scrap of about 10 kB it would make an 10-15 FPS increase in ORBITER.

Here's a couple of photos I managed to dig up after some searching on the TDRSS:

Stowed prior launch:

Deployment from the Shuttle:

Artist's graphic of the TDRSS fully deployed on-orbit:

I'll continue my search for more photos and graphics.

Thanks! My own computer crashed while trying to save an image from google the first time (Thanks microsoft you're great!) so that's handy.

I've managaed to reduce down the Magellan model size by 145KB- all cylinder type shapes are about 1/2 as detailed (eg like 6 sides instead of 12) and i've changed the HGI mesh too, so it's a bit less elaborate now... It doesn't look as good as the first one, but the difference isn't that big really. You can download the new version from http://homepage.eircom.net/~jackhiggins ... _lores.zip

Hope that helps! Oh btw what 3d editor are you using on the models?

For the 3D modeller I'm using Anim8or. I have an simple ESA Mars Express mesh. To see an early picture of in ORBITER see below:
Image

It was made from some computer-generated photos of the spacecraft found on the Internet. Tell me if you want the 3ds file+textures.
