TERRIER sent me this model this afternoon. I had to get it on the shuttle immediately! It really is terrific. Here are some pics:
And...a bit closer...
You can get the whole package here:

Thanks TERRIER...

Yes...it really is a great model in its own right...
Bit more to do on the shuttle...I will try to add the three (four?) stays that keep the Canadarm in place. An 'in work version' may be coming too.
I'm really pleased how this model is turning out...thanks for all your help!
Many regards...bh.

I was almost going to include the 3 'support stays', the sketchy diagram I've been working from has each of them made up of 2 parts, the 'MRL' at the bottom and the 'MPM' at the top ?????

Do you or anyone else know what they are, or what the initials stand for?
One thing I have noticed is the Canada logo has somehow turned to a light shade of grey, can you adjust the material editor for 'canadalogo' to white. I think it will look better.
By the way, here's the link to the diagram I've been using;

TERRIER...I wil look into it, although the arm does have a sort of 'sleeve' that adds to the texture...
You know what's next don't you? Great ad for Canada, don't you think?

The inner workings of the arm are covered with a few layers of protection including the outer white sleeve or 'thermal blanket'. I reckon for true accuracy the sleeve should have lots of individual folds and wrinkles, how do you fancy putting them into the model?, and dont cheat by using a texture!!! Maybe something for Jack to have a go at in the future!?
Great ad for Canada, don't you think?
Yeh, I didn't realise they'd contributed so much to space exploration

Seriously it's a fine Country, COME ON THE BLUE JAYS!!!
What we really need however, is an 'advert' for Great Britain, I suppose the nearest we've come to it so far is the ESA logo on the Ulysses dish.
There must be a Union Jack somewhere that can put into CELESTIA!?

I
could add all the folds & wrinkles without using a texture, but i prefer to keep my models under 1MB...

Usually those wrinkles
double the file size (taking stardust as an example), and with all the faces on the canadarm, (it's mostly a cylinder, remember?) can you imagine what size it'd be?!!

Indeed....

You know there's an even more obvious ESA logo on the side of the ISO too?! Beagle 2 probably has a union jack somewhere on it though...? Maybe someone wants to model one of the starchaser prototypes? We don't yet have any x-prize candidates in celestia...
Ireland is quite under-represented in the whole space industry too... We had 1 (one) instrument on Giotto that's as far as we've got I think!

TERRIER...sorry. I'm going to have to ask you to send me those stays...I just can't get anywhere near...doh! Sometimes ESB just don't work!
As to the greyness of the 'Canada' logo...I think my gf2 card is to blame here. I had problems with white textures before. It should be OK on your system...I haven't done anything to your Canada logo.
As for wrinkles on the sleeve. It will be a texture!...Me? modelling from scratch?...AAARRrrGGgghhhH!!
Great model again...many thanks.

I've dropped the CSA a line asking for some more information on these 'stays', let's see if I get a quick response.
As for the grey logo, it has appears to have changed colour on my system. I downloaded the model from your link saw that it had turned grey when viewing in CELESTIA so I imported the model into anim8or to find the material colour for the logo sleeve has definately turned to a light grey!
I'll complete the stays as soon as poss, correct the colour and send you the complete shuttle and canada arm model in 3ds.

Well done TERRIER!!
I think the stays just round the whole model off nicely - here's another pic:
Same link as above...
Is this model finished?...mmm...I wonder!

The Earth texture will be available tomorrow...(Sunday) according to Mr Edwards...you're all in for a treat I can tell you.
My GF2 just isn't good at the shallow water/deep water blends...so...I will have to buy a new card. Oh well!
Many thanks to all of you who have helped me with this model...Paul (Darkmiss)...we started this one off in February...just before the disaster...remember?..Thanks Jack and thanks Terrier...bloody great job! ESBs all round...on me...at the Harcourt Arms.
Best regards...bh.

One question...
What the hell is an ESB?!! not
this kind of ESB i'm guessing...!!
I think windscreen wipers could be next...
Landing gear, drogue chute....?!!!
The Earth texture will be available tomorrow...(Sunday) according to Mr Edwards...you're all in for a treat I can tell you.
I just hope it doesn't take forever to download....

Rass
So's your new pulsar system!
bh
The extra item I was trying to add was a light beam effect from the light on the small camera but as I've just mentioned in my posted reply to Rass's pulsar the experiment failed.
I too am looking forward to this new earth texture but I reckon Don should leave it at least another week so he can fully iron out any problems
jack
Oh for the joy of my new 150k broadband, what used to take 3hours now on a good day can take well under an hour!
I've been checking out the Beagle 2 website, and from what I've seen there don't appear to be any Union Jacks, however tomorrow night I might watch a programme on Discovery Channel called 'Alex in Wonderland' with Alex James from BLUR who's had a big interest in the project but I fear it will be more about his music!

You know the reason that they made a doccumentary about that...? the signal to say "The Beagle has landed" is going to be a 2 minute blur song.... I don't particularly like their new stuff but it's a good way to get more people interested in the project I suppose....

The CSA very kindly sent me some information on the canadarm today and they mentioned what the MRL and MPM on the 'stays' were.
Here's their explanation;
1. The Canadarm is fixed to all American shuttles but can be removed during
flight preparation for the primary weight reason, as it was for last
Columbia flight. It is also known as SRMS (Shuttle Remote Manipulator
System) or PDRS (Payload Deployment & Retrieval System).
2. General info about SRMS:
http://www.mdrobotics.ca/canarm_frame.htmlhttp://www.mdrobotics.ca/descrms.htmhttp://www.mdrobotics.ca/histrms.htm3. MPM: Manipulator Positioning Mechanism, MRL: Manipulator Restraint Latch.
The PDRS has four MPMs. The shoulder MPM attaches the arm to the orbiter.
When cradled,
the arm rests in the three other MPMs: forward, mid, and aft. All four roll
in, or stow, to
provide clearance when closing the payload bay doors and roll out, or
deploy, for arm or payload
operations (Figure 2-2). The MPMs also house the MRLs that constrain the arm
during launch,
entry, and other times when the arm is not in use.
They also sent me some detailed diagrams which I have e-mailed to bh. We'll then come to a decision on whether we need to make any alterations to the model!

We both decided that the detail is too small to warrant another update...however...after messing with some texturing for another project I thougt I'd try in out on the shuttle. I know the detail's not accurate and I don't know whether I like it or not...I think I've got 'Shuttle blindness'!
See what you think:
