I've updated the surface texture map derived from Percival Lowell's maps of Mars.
V3 incorporates the following improvements:
a) a crude conversion from Mercator to Plate Carree: I linearly scaled each 10 degrees of latitude to be the same size as the interval between 50 and 60 degrees south latitude.
b) some errors in alignment between the original two GIF images have been corrected.
c) Olympus Mons was used to align the map's longitude with the standard map.
d) the resolution has been increased from 1K to 2K.
Here's a comparison betwen v1, v2 and v3:
An updated colorized version will follow.

As I threatened, here's a colorized version:

Here is what Kim Stanley Robinson's 'Red-Green-Blue Mars' map looks like in Celestia. If you don't mind a little text distortion its works quite well.
I only posted the picture because "ogg" brought up the idea.
Don.

I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.
Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.

Don,
That map is by Frans Blok, illustrating Robinson's series. I think it's best to give the proper attributions. After all, you wouldn't want us to say your maps were by NASA, would you?
Ogg,
I'm quite familiar with that particular map . See http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/blok/index.html
