hey guys i am still working on my new addon!
this is my first try at creating my own fictional star system.
if you can't already tell, the bodies are going to have names based on Norse Mythology Gods. with Odin being the central star of the system. a blue super giant! the placement of the bodies in the system are also based on the mythology so if you know your Norse mythos, you'll be pleased to see how the bodies layout with their moons and relative distances to Odin.
still, if anyone is interested in helping me create some awesome textures based on my view of what the planets and moons are supposed to be, i would greatly appreciate it and give credit in the finished product.
this pic shows the orbits of the bodies. kind of hard to tell how they relate from this angle, i will show another one later from another angle to give a sense of the depth of the system.
since the star is a blue super giant, the bodies orbit MUCH further away from the star than the bodies in the Solar system. so from the surface of Midgard, Odin would appear as a really bright, small point of light. i'd imagine you'd even be able to look directly at Odin from the surface.

There are several fractal planet surface generators available which might help. Some are free, some are commercial.
thank you selden! i already have the orbits lined up everything looks good. i couldn't have done it without your awesome pages on creating addons!!! im stoked to see this system come into being. been working on it alllllll day long. i just need to get the textures down. i was wondering if you could direct me to a resource page or something similar? i need a good generator. what do you use?

I use planet, by Torben ?. Mogensen, which is reasonably good for rocky or Earth-like planets.

ok thanks! i downloaded Planet. i just don't know how to use it. apparently i need MingW?
i think i had that before but i wasn't clear on how to use it or what it was for. John Van Vliet's tutorial on Planet is cool, but it doesn't really explain how to initiate the program with mingw. i know there's no GUI.
have you made any addons?

I use cygwin to do compilations under Windows, but it does require some familiarity with Unix and linux conventions.
Yes, I've created a few Addons myself. Some are on the Motherlode, some are elsewhere, some are still in progress after many years of not being able to get them just right...

i've tried all day to figure out how to "compile" and run that planet program to no avail. i am just not as technically minded as others i guess. too complicated for me lol. i'll just have to find another way. thank you for your advice and help.

For textures, I usually use Photoshop.You might want to start by altering a few high-resolution maps of real planets. And by alter I mean use the clone tool to change the planet's surface, not simply recolor. Maybe then you should overlay a few on each other, desaturate, and use that as a base height map for one of the planets.

... and please, be cautious of the poles ! Mapping a texture on a sphere is difficult, since you may have the bad "polar pinch" effect. Try to use some good textures which don't have this problem in Celestia, cut its poles to paste it on your custom texture (and use some blending for better results).
The poles is what makes planet textures difficult to do.
I used the excellent planet Alien Skin plug-in for Photoshop to do nice looking poles, instead of copying the usual textures (Mars is too much copied, and it shows on most fictious textures you may found around).

i have been working on this addon for the better part of the past few weeks. every night i am constantly messing with it to get it to be really nice. i like the textures, which i shamelessly ripped from other addons because i lack the creative means to make my own. i also lack funds for photoshop and other various programs to create nice textures. so until i can truly make my own textures, i am using others. i ultimately want to make my own because this is my own fictional system. it's unique to user-created celestia addons as far as i can tell.

You don't need to spend money to get a decent paint program.
Paint.net is reasonably good. Gimp is a more sophisticated paint program, but somewhat harder to learn.

i have gimp but i haven't come across any "clone" type functions yet. i'll have to mess with it when i wake up.

also when i wake up i'll have an updated list of the bodies of the Odin system!!! with details and such. i'll probably delete my older posts of the list because it'd be confusing. i also cleaned up the orbits so that earlier screenshot with all the nasty orbits will be much nicer. will post a screenshot as well of the new system.
i have two comets to put in place (Hugin and Munin) as suggested by a previous poster.
i have approx 20? (i think, can't remember right now..) asteroids or perhaps minor moons or dwarf planets that i want to implement as well. they are all named after Norse Valkyries. so they'll be like little norse angels flying around the system. probably split them up between asteroids, dwarf planets and minor moons, who knows. maybe use some meshes or cmods? don't know yet.
