Chuft-Captain

I will give it a go but I’ve just realised that I edit the default ISS.ssc file using MS Word and that works fine.

Guckytos

That was a cut and paste job from the initial part of the file, there is a lot more to the file that I did not include because – as far as I’m aware – it is not relevant to the procedure. I ended the cut just before what you say is missing. I just wanted to show the supposed relevant info.

I have copied below (from MS Word) that full section (not the full file) so please let me know if you see anything amiss.

Code: Select all

No joy on the notepad edit. Just as before.

The unedited ssc file for the model displays ok just not with the correct orbit. Searching for the default (Celestia's) ISS works fine even with it's ssc file edited to produce the correct orbit. So, with the default ISS in the extras-standard folder, and the add-on model in the extras folder everything works ok (just that the model does not have the correct orbit).

Editing the model's ssc file and everything gets messed. The default ISS is found but doesn't display and it's orbit is wrong. The model doesn't get found or displayed; searching for "Zarya" (it's search ID) doesn't even register.

I tried posting both files to compare the two but the maximum number of characters allowed for a message is 60,000 and with the model's file being rather large the total number of characters amounted to 152,000 so I was not able to post them.

Don't think it's necessary now, I have been advised there are none other than 4 ssc files that would require modification. Four! That would be a nightmare to update given the orbit data changes almost daily. I see there are a lot of very smart and knowledgeable people associated with Celestia. Is there any auto-update feature in the works? You know, Starry Night style, press a button and voila it's updated.

I mean it's the ISS one of the, if not THE, greatest of humankind's achievements. Surely an auto-update is not too much to ask :)

Not sure how you would implement it.

ISS's orbit is constantly changing due to tidal effects, which I suppose can be predicted, atmospheric drag which is highly variable, and re-boosts from spacecraft docked to it. Not sure there's a location on the internets to find the orbit of ISS that is updated enough to make it feasible to use Celestia to find out when ISS will fly over your location.

But I haven't ever looked into it.
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

I think you'll have to use the model that ships with Celestia. There is a site on the web that tracks the ISS and I was able to translate the parameters to the ISS ssc quite easily, although on a three times a week basis because of 'drift'.

This was a while ago now and I haven't kept it up. I'm just saying it is possible.

Making a program that does the translation could make this very efficient, effortless, maintenance less always available.

Yes, that's what I've been doing.

With Linuxman's excellent model having 4 ssc files then it looks like that would mean having to do that much more translating of parameters. I was hoping for automation but it appears not to be. The folks over at Starry Night can do it, I guess Celestia, as beautiful as it is, has a different "direction".

Just an update on this mega work of art from my end...

I nearly threw my mac out the window over christmas... It wont run any of the scripts with crashing, and I mean powering off! even if I use no textures!
Very frustrating.

Managed to extract the shuttle from the scenario though and I'm getting some super earth viewing, even downloaded some ground to air shuttle chatter to go with it... super with some ambient music!

Any other payload than SpaceHab and I get a very jerky framerate. Must get a new mac.

One small omission from the shuttle however. KU-Band antenna. I think it's important to the overall look.

Struggle a lot to get all the Canadarm pieces to go in situ, I think it would be easier if the ssc for the bits were tied to the shuttle removing Zarya from their sscs.

Superb work Linuxm@n... staggering.

Hello everyone the space station soon back while waiting you can see some videos that I am uploading on a new youtube channel.
https://studio.youtube.com/channel/UCs8IB3jScnIy6 ... ate","sortOrder":"DESCENDING"}

ISS SPACE STATION CELESTIA
it is a 2.1 gb monster, there are certainly errors and failures, that is why I propose to send it to the most experienced celestia users with wetransfer so that they can test it before publication.
The confinement of the coronavirus allowed me to get back to 3d and continue the work.

Hi linuxman, welcome back to Celestia.
I cannot wait to test your new super-detailed ISS model, but I cannot reach your videos.
It asks me to open a new channel, I did it, but then how can I reach your videos?
Sorry to trouble, but it's all new stuff for me.
