Lunar Landers

Here's a new addon to replace the old lunar addons from Jack. Since I can't post any large models here, the addon below is missing some lunar models which can be found on the Motherlode or even on the forum, in another topic (
apolloLM_full.3ds,
apolloLM_desc.3ds,
luna9.3ds,
luna13.3ds and
lunokhod.3ds). I placed some flags on the lunar ground instead of using the old models from Jack, since I find them very ugly or inacurate.
There are some small variations in probe location, if you compare the probes from Jack's addon and the ones from the addon below.
Use and edit the addon as you want. Please, report any error here.
Enjoy !

Cham,
I appreciate your work on Jack's lunar addon.
Some time ago I tried to complete it by finding two other missing models: "lunarsurveyor.3ds" and "crash.3ds". Such names are present in original ssc files. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find those models anywhere. I suspect that they just don't exist at all. Do you know something about them?

I have also attempted a thorough search for the "crash.3ds" file with no success. Does anyone have this file? Would love to place it on the ML if it's available.
I have also downloaded Cham's zip file and will play with it some more. Thanks
very much Martin.

As far as the Soviet Lunar Sample missions go, I think that the following file can be used here. Check
this page for the file.

I never saw those crash.3ds and surveyor models. As for the luna models, they really sucks. I only left the luna9, luna13 and lunokhod models since they are acceptable to my taste.

Martin,
Just wanted to thank you once again for the Lunar Landers file. Simply
amazing how much junk is lying around on the surface of the Moon.
I very much like your use of the flags to indicate where a model should be too. This way, you don't have to look at junk models, and the locations are accurate enough for my tastes. Thanks a lot.

Cham,
Thank you for answering my question.
I concluded, we have different tastes. My taste is quite simple: I prefer having even ugly (but at least approximately correct) model, than not having any model at all

I have noticed that we can use another of Jack's models for the Luna 16, 20, 23 and 24 sample-return missions. The appropriate file was referenced above, but click
HERE to get it if you haven't already. This file contains both the full sample-return spacecraft (for positioning on the Lunar surface) as well as what was left after the return portion of the spacecraft had departed.
Just some more information for you.

These models don't look too bad at all to me, and I believe that I prefer them to just the flags.
Also, one other thing here... The Lunokhod Rovers also feature a Lunokhod Base Station model which can be placed somewhere in the vicinities of the two Soviet Lunokhod Rovers. This model package can be found on the ML
HERE. These are also not too bad in my opinion.
Again, just FYI...
Thanks, Bob

And here's the Apollo crash sites addon. Exactly the same position as from Jack's addon. I added a small crash model with a logo. Enjoy !

Boy... I had no idea how much junk we have left on the Moon.
Thanks for the file Martin. I think I'm going to take the time to create a "real" crash model file though. Can't be all that difficult to do via Anim8or can it?
At any rate, I think I'll give it a try. May take me a while because I don't really know what I'm doing here, but I have already created a rudimentary crash file using pieces of some of the other 3ds files I have.
Thanks again, Bob

Bob,
the bodies which crashed on the moon have been totally disintegrated by the impact, at about 2 km per second (about 6 times the velocity of sound) ! There are no pieces left there. Only dust.

Are we certain of that?
Seems to me that
something ought to be left. No problem though... Maybe one day we'll get there and have a look, eh?

I had the idea to make an impact crater for the crash sites. Here's a test version :

Unfortunately, Celestia sucks at this kind of things. As seen on the side, there are all sorts of clipping problems. I'm not sure I'll finish this. Maybe a simple flat billboard is a better way.

Hey, no problem...
I really appreciate the location data even by itself. This is good stuff for us Bozos who have nothing else to do except explore the Universe.
