beginers 3d celestia model problem.

Ive made a star base for my andoria addon, ive managed to place it in celestia but the textures are not being used for some reason.

i did the model in sketchup, then exported it as a kmz and extracted the collada model, then convert it into 3ds.

currently its all white.

Where did you place the texture files? You might want to look at the console log (activated by pressing the ~ (tilde) key) and see if there are any texture loading errors reported. It's also possible that the textures were simply not properly exported during the kmz to collada conversion or the collada to 3ds conversion.

Yes it seems that the 3ds model has no textures, as i found out theres an extra file used in KMZ to code for the textures instead of using them in the model it self.

i might need to reopen the model in blender and re aply the textures, umm although its sort of cumbersome to use blender on a laptop.

You might want to consider a simpler 3D modeling package.
I prefer Anim8or, myself.

When you apply the materials to the model, you can specify the path to the appropriate textures in Anim8or itself.
Just define the path(s) under each of the materials you are using. Normally, these will be set to something like
textures\medres so that the add-on can be placed in the extras folder and the textures can still be found no matter
what directory you place them into. As long as the directory contains a textures\medres directory, the 3ds model
works fine.

Obviously, there are more details involved, but I know that you can do this. Just play with Anim8or some more.

Thanks, Bob

Celestia normally looks in the textures/medres directory which is associated with the Addon.

The following Web pages include suggestions for what might cause texture problems:

http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celest ... lling.html

Thank you, but no luck.

currently ive managed to just give colors to broad sectiond of a particular model:

But the lack of the textures reduces greatly its effect.

i would like to know, using animator hor the textures are given to a model and translated to the medres folder and allowing it to use them in the 3ds model?

thanks.

I've never had any problems with Anim8or's use of textures, so long as I keep both Anim8or's and Celestia's limitations in mind.

Specify only the name, not the path to the file.
You'll need two copies of a .JPG texture while you're working on the model: one texture has to be in the same directory with the .an8 and .3ds model files for use by Anim8or, and the other copy in textures/medres for use by Celestia. JPEG format is recognized by both programs. While working on the texture, use a non-compressed image format and convert it to .JPG for viewing on the model. When you're finished, convert it to whatever format is appropriate for your final use: PNG, DDS or JPEG. Don't waste your time using other image formats.

Don't forget that on models you can only use textures which are smaller or equal to the maximum texture size supported by your graphics card. VTs don't work, either. It's best to limit model textures to 1K on a side, since that's supported by all modern cards. 2K, 4K or 8K work only on some cards.
