Help cannot replace Sol texture

Hi. In Celestia 1.4.1, I have been using a great texture for the sun, which tones down the size and color of the big sunspots on the default texture. it also adds Runar's great solar flares, and Cham's wonderful solar convection cells.

Here is what it looks like in 1.4.1:

Image

In 1.5.0pre5, the solar flares and convection cells work, but the sol texture does not overlay, even through the radii of the sun in 1.4.1 and 1.5.0 are similar. Instead, i get some weird spherical artifact inside sol, that can be seen only from one side (it goes away when I rotate the view). My texture has not replaced the existing sol texture, even though my ssc radius is larger than sol's.

Image

The ssc file is simple. It is:

"Sun" "Sol"
{
Texture "sun1.jpg"
Emissive true
Radius 701000
Oblateness 0.009

EllipticalOrbit {
Period 1e10
SemiMajorAxis 1e-10
Eccentricity 0.00
Inclination 0.00
}

RotationPeriod 609.6
Obliquity 7.25
EquatorAscendingNode 75.62
}

Can anyone tell me how to place a new texture over our sun (or any other star in 1.5.0pre5)?? :(

Thanks in advance

Frank

Why not just change the texture of the Sun in the stc file?

Also, I'd suggest using FixedPosition [ 0 0 0 ] instead of the EllipticalOrbit for 1.5.0. While the EllipticalOrbit still works just fine, the new FixedPosition is easier to use.

Chris:

I don't want to sound dumb, but what stc file? Does our sun has its own stc file in the data folder somewhere?

I have been using an ssc file for the sun texture ... overlaying a planet texture onto the sun with a large radius. I guess that is not the way to do it anymore, but out of interest, does the sun have an stc file somewhere?

Modify, Replace and Add dispositions, that already exist for ssc bodies, would be really welcome for stc and dsc objects too...

Chris, is there a specific reason this hasn't been added yet ?

I think he means in the nearstars.stc

Code: Select all

0 "Sol:Sun"

{
   Texture "yourtexture.*"
    OrbitBarycenter "Solar System Barycenter"
    CustomOrbit "vsop87-sun"

   SpectralType "G2V"
   AbsMag 4.83

   RotationPeriod      609.12  # 25.38 days
   Obliquity             7.25  # correct orientation relative to ecliptic
   EquatorAscendingNode 75.77  #
   RotationOffset       23.00  # standard meridian
}

Lack of time, mostly . . . There are probably some complications with stars that I haven't thought of, but nothing that should ultimately prevent Modify and Replace from working.

After updating to 1.5, I too am now experiencing a strange spherical darkness at the center of the sun, the size of which changes depending on which angle you look at it from. I'm using Runar's "A portrait of our sun" add-on. I want to keep the add-on. What is going on? What should I do? It worked in 1.4.

Download the 1.5 update from the CM. It is a small text file that makes it behave in 1.5

Frank: you can download it too, and use the STC file it contains for your own texture.

Thanks! That worked great!

So, I was thinking of putting this texture on other stars. At first I figured I'd just need to change the name of the star from "Sol" to "Whateverstar". But that didn't work. I changed the radius... and that didn't help either. I even made both a stc file and a ssc file for the new star... to no avail. Is there an easier way?

Regarding this,I??m pretty disappointed.In the last pre versions of Celestia 1.5.0,there was an effort to improve star rendering.But NOW in the final version,the bland version returned and the only stars with textures are the Sun and Gliese 581.
I would like to know WHY Chris came back in his initial proposal?

CM is NOT Celestia Motherlode, CM = CelestialMatters
