Spitzer telescope : new model

Just to inform the peeps that there's a new, medium-highly detailed, model of the Spitzer space telescope here :

http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/reso ... model.html

I'll work on it to improve the model, since there is no color, and the mesh needs some small repairs.

?? I don't have any problem to open it (with Safari 3.0.4).

I'm working on that model right now. Some pieces need some better smoothing. I had to rise up the resolution a bit, for few pieces here and there, and I optimized some others (removing useless parts). That model is actually much better than the one we already have. And it isn't a big one (about 600 KB).

EDIT : Maybe it's bettter to start from their first page :

http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/

Then select the resources option, then the informal_education option, so you can find the model page.

Cham,

Methinks someone changed something at the site because when you
first put the link up in your first post, I went directly to it with NO
problems.

Now, I can't connect to it no matter what I do...

Just FYI...

I don't suppose there's an .SSC for it?

Well, I don't know how accurate it is, but the one I'm using is from Jack.

The model as now been completely repaired and improved. I just have to add the colors and materials. This may be a long process, since I'll have to split many pieces and check all the available pictures of the real thing, and since I'm pretty busy with my job right now. I don't know if I'll have time to finish the model before 20 december (I'll leave for India, so I'll be VERY far away from Celestia for almost a month).

O well, ... it was MUCH easier and faster to do than what I thought. The model is already almost finished ! That version is really much more satisfying than the old model from Jack.

The 3ds file is 2.7 MB, and contains about 145k triangles.

Sorry, I can't show you a picture of the model.

Looking forwards to it!

The model is finished ! :D

I'll take one or two more days, just to inspect the mesh in Celestia, before publishing it. I don't want to keep it for myself alone (what gives ?).

Some pieces may be optimised a bit more (especially the bolts), but I don't think it's worth it to give more time on this nice model just to save about 1000 to 2000 triangles (max!), out of a total of 145K triangles.

Indeed!

I, too, tried using Jack's model but I wasn't able to get it to work so I just made my own SSC with random orbital parameters. Good detail for the model, but of course, no textures.

I'm certainly looking foreward to your model, Cham.

Today I can load the page; indeed it's a much better model! Have you send an email as those guys asked? (else I'll send it)

Yes, I emailed them. I didn't got a response yet. Since they don't give any support, I guess they will not respond. They only want to know where the model is going. I stated explicitely what I intended for the model.

ElChristou, do you mind if I send you the corrected model by email, so you can publish it here, for the pleasure of everyone ? The Motherlode is a mess and it's too slow to update for my taste.

I'll publish a 3ds version only (no CMOD version), since there's some problems with smoothing with the CMODTool utility (we need to solve this, by the way !).

No problemo.

I started a thread in the bugs forum about this. http://www.celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic ... 6219#96219

?? how? windowed, full screen mode? they should not be any kind of problem as there is no transparency on this model...

Windowed... dunno why...
