Trouble with SSC file

Hi All,

I am attempting to add the planet PERN to the star Rukbat. I have tried to follow the instructions but when I load Celestia, it jams on the Pern.ssc file. It doesn't lock up, it just doesn't get any further.

Here is the code I have.

#########################
# Pern.ssc
#########################
"Pern" "HIP 95347" {
Texture "earth.png"
Radius 65000

EllipticalOrbit {
Period 1
SemiMajorAxis 1
Inclination 15.00
}
}
#########################

and it resides in extras\Pern and is the only file in the folder.

I gather that earth.png will be automatically found from the textures folder.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

[edited to describe actual problem]

You forgot to include a line terminator at the end of the last line of your .SSC file. Open it in Notepad and move the cursor to the end of the file. The cursor should be at the left margin, not at the end of the last line of text. Type an [enter] and save the file.

This problem is fixed in v1.5.0.

How tricky would this bug be to fix I wonder? I don't know much about handling strings or files in C/C++, so have no idea of the issues here, but its a fairly longstanding problem.

(Not that I'm holding my breath for any further bugfixes on Celestia, ever)

Chaos,

Did you overlook my last sentence?
It's fixed in v1.5.0.

And, in particular, it's fixed in pre3.

Thankyou, I never would have got that!

Weyrman,

being a newbie to astronomy and Celestia, I am curious
where is the planet PERN and the star Rukbat?
Can I see that star in my 8 inch telescope? I would really love to. How bright is it?

The names sound so interesting and mind-inspiring...

Thanks,
Bye, Fridger

Oops sorry I'm going blind.

But there is still the issue that 1.5.0 isn't a full release. It isn't fixed in the version that a newcomer to the project will download off the main site.

(It also isn't fixed in the versions provided by various Linux distributions but that's another matter...)

Oh excellent, we have the typical response to anyone who is doing a project that isn't totally reality-based and isn't Runar (who seems to get a free pass to do fictional projects without getting his head bitten off or being on the receiving end of totally undeserved sarcasm).

No wonder Celestia is dead.

No, simply because Runar is GOOD at it!

And incidentally, I don't believe Celestia is dead.

I suppose Celestia is just leading another life...and this community has been put into the "refrigerator" by Chris for an indefinte time..

Meanwhile I am also convinced of Christophe T.'s suggestion that Chris is working FULL Time on Celestia since middle of July, say. Just as he has announced it.

Under a paid contract, of course...This has happened before, I guess about 2 years ago, when we set out to do Celestia - FT -1.x.

I have been ordered by selden to edit this post because it was too sarcastic.

It remains to be seen what happens to Fridger's remarks about "being a newbie to astronomy and Celestia".

I hope your sarcasm was not a consequence of my post?

Well, aren't we all Newbies when it comes to unforseen aspects of life ;-) ? I don't think I offended anyone, or made a political, religous or sexy statement?

What are 6 years of hard work with Celestia? It's close to ZERO on a cosmic time scale. ;-)

-------------------------------------------
Notably, these 6 years being not even worth a short email by Chris, telling me what's up since three months?
-------------------------------------------

So, indeed, I am a Newbie about Celestia, don't you think so?

Hmm...When I see Selden going on to defend the "moral" in here, this reminds me of a very touching story/movie:

Remember this bunch of American soldiers in the second World War who stranded on a lonely island in the Pacific where some Japanese soldiers happend to be stationed as well. So they went on fighting each other fiercely and honorably, not knowing that the war was OVER since a long time...

sorry to interrupt , but now i got the reason for "Posts: 5889" ;)

i think our theoretical physicist does not use common sense, something like the above statement was visible on my other post on "world maps"

you are one of the main developer (wow, look, at that 3rd in the list), you have the power to do what you want with the source code of celestia, a celestia is GPL and whatever you do just requires this statement "copyright chris laurel"
so why should you wait for one ? (like "commet allez vous" emails? )

go unleash yourself and take the celestia from ZERO to whatever no: you like :)

bye take care :)

Let's stop this, friends...

We have been snatching Weyman's thread for entirely unimportant talking ;-) . So Selden will correctly erase all this and lock the thread.

To answer t00fri's question, Rukbat is a real star, part of Sagittarius. Pern is a fictional planet that orbits it on which Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider series of books is set.
