...How do I "wrap" the generated lanscape around a sphere? Is it even possible?

I do not know if Terragen can doing this, but that to be possible to make spherical terrain the answer is yes. Look this:

The spherical terrain is available in the commercial version; the freeware version is limited exclusively to plains.
