Nebula for stars

Post #1by Spaceman » 17.03.2007, 20:55

Hello :D

I notice that you can't create a star farther than 16.000 light years. So you can't create stars at the otherside of Milky Way or at other galaxies. But i have an idea: How about nebula for stars? I notice that galaxy and globular clusters add-ons are "nebulas", so why not stars "nebula"?

Primarily it's an issue of precision.

The distance units used to place Star objects within Celestia are much smaller than the distance units used to place DSC objects, so Stars can be placed at much more accurate locations than DSC objects can be placed.

As a result, however, the "yardstick" used to place Stars is much shorter than the one used to place DSC objects.

Chris is hoping to provide a way around this limitation in a future version of Celestia, perhaps by being able to specify additional "origins" for the relative placement of Star objects.

p.s.
One could simulate stars using Nebula objects, but they couldn't have planets orbiting around them. Also, Celestia does not currently handle them very well. For example, large numbers of them would cause Celestia to run very slowly, since Nebula objects are not yet stored using an "octree" data structure.

I notice it. When i have lots of nebulas from Motherlode, Celestia runs too slow :(

Not to mention that nebulae for stars would make the star appear flat and without substance, no flare and no atmosphere... It is better to just create within the 16k barrier a nebula shell or skybox to give the appearence of being elsewhere...

Don't forget that I can add stars (shown as dots) at any place in the Celestia universe (see the topic in the addons thread, about "dust" models). The only thing I'm waiting for is for Chris to add a magnitude option for CMOD models, so my fake stars could have a luminosity variable with distance.
