I assume it's not too easy to modify it to use a different texture? I'm using a dds for Mars, and I'd hate to lose that.

On another note, just to let you know, if you have labels enabled, the objects appear on top of the label so instead of seeing "Olympus Mons" I see "us Mons"

Jose,

The labels are associated with the planet.

So far as the current version of Celestia is concerned, objects drawn at particular locations with respect to the planet's surface (the Olympus Mons model, in this case) are not part of the planet, iThey're just more satellites that're orbiting around the planet in a special way, and are drawn after the planet is drawn.

For the label to appear on top of the Olympus Mons model, it'd have to be associated with the Olympus Mons object.

I agree, it would be nice if Celestia treated objects that are defined with LongLat declarations as if they were part of the planet.

Jose,If you want you can alter the height (the last variable again) of the location itself to put it over the model but it will float about then in mid air probably when you are close to Mons,
If you want to alter the texture to match your Mars texture you will have to align the same part of your texture (Olympus Mons ) with mine and save it as 'mons.jpg' the same name and format as the original.Jestr

Well, I've given up on trying to get my texture to match and instead I've installed m46. However, after doing that, the models (Olympus, et al) no longer line up on the surface. In fact, it appears almost on the opposite side of the planet! Am I still doing something wrong here?

Jose,

Normally M46 designates the Nebula Messier 46. That's a deep-sky object that has nothing to do with Mars.

When things are "on the wrong side of the planet", that usually means that you're using an Addon surface map that has the wrong orientation. Many maps have 0 degrees of longitude at the edge and 180 degrees in the center. They won't work properly with Celestia. You need to use maps that have 180 degrees at the edges and 0 degrees of longitude in the center. Many people didn't realize this was necessary when they made maps for Celestia a couple of years ago.

Hi jose, space graphics m46 texture is like the rest of their Mars textures
180 degrees out. You can change this in Photoshop or other image editor software.See this thread
http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5138&start=0
for more details on how to do this.
I have a VT version ,correctly aligned on my FTP site here
ftp://81.108.220.185
which I used for making the textures for the Mars surface models in the first place,Jestr

You're right, however that's not what I'm talking about. As the first post in this thread says, the addon is designed to work with the space-graphics.com m46 Mars Surface Texture (http://www.space-graphics.com/m46_shaded.htm). That is what I'm referring to. The name might be confusing, but it is their name, not mine. I appologize for any confusion.

But, as for the orientation, if this addon says it is designed for the m46 texture, I would have assumed it would work with the way it is oriented... Or, perhaps there is some way to "shift" the existing texture so that the orientation is correct?

Hi all,
I am new to this and I am trying to find out how/where can I find the texture for the Earth 4 BY ago and make Celestia show it.

Can someone help?

Thanks a lot!

Irene.

Take a look at the Mars texture alignment thread...btw...Celestias default mars is wrongly aligned.

Thanks, the mars alignment thing seems to be helpful. Now I just need to find where GIMP hides that feature :)

Also, sorry for asking about this right as jestr posted an answer, I guess I was typing as he clicked "submit" ;)

Hey there...

Just a note concerning the alignment of the Mars texture. As has been mentioned
many times now, *all* the planets must be aligned with their 0 degrees longitude
directly in the center of the image. This can be done very easily with the freeware
Gimp program. Hope I'm not mis-understanding what your talking about, but I've
aligned *lots* of planet textures now, and this *is* the correct alignment for
Celestia 1.3.2 and later... Just load the image into Gimp and press Shift/CTRL/O
to start the offset routines. Piece of cake even for us Brain-Dead types.
You can shift the image to the right or the left however many degrees you want to.

Take care, Bob

What makes you think this?

A telescopic view of Mars from a position near Earth seems to have the correct orientation when I compare Celestia's views of Mars with Earthbound photographs taken at specific times.

For example, compare how Mars looks from Earth on 31-July-2003 8:44 UT with Ed Grafton's photograph at http://www.ghg.net/egrafton/m7-31-03.jpg

Here's the Cel://URL for this viewpoint: cel://Follow/Sol:Earth/2003-07-31T08:49:31.26847?x=Lf9bMArcwnvHDA&y=3ztxTqZoAw&z=lR+kqDU9wq8M&ow=-0.013364&ox=0.810813&oy=-0.111359&oz=-0.574459&select=Sol:Mars&fov=0.009036&ts=1.000000<d=0&rf=1559&lm=21

Oh no!...Here we go...If Celestia's default texture is correct then so is Space graphic's texture and D Brady's Mars is off!

Scratches head...

Selden...my default textures are from 1.3.0...so they are probably not the present default textures...I tend to click no on the medres texture replacements...
