2001 a Space Odyssey work in progress

Post #1by linuxm@n » 05.01.2008, 14:42

Fist: Happy new year

Hello, i'am doing an addon with 2001 space odyssey spacecrafts.
I use Jestr and Frank Gregorio models and made a 3ds convetion from the discovery and pod models in ligthwave format found on the site http://www.lwg3d.org . (same models as Cham's 2001 addon).
Giant Discovery's radar is separate and made a constant rotation
I have make the "interiors" from discovery pod model and from the moonbus.
I use The Tycho and Clavius base from the orbiter addon 2001.
2001 astonauts Franck Poole and Dave Bowman are the creation from Max Grueter:

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/ ... 2798140258

I made also 2001 Hall computer (in the Discovery bay)

Script in progress:

-Dave Bowman eva1 to change a radar piece
-Eva and murder of Franck Poole
-Aries Moon landing on Clavius base
-the blue Danube (il like to include the music but y don't know how)

Some picture here

They look great.

A request however: please link to small thumbnails which link to the large pictures. There are many people who have slow network connections.

See http://www.celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7565 for how to do this.

Your screenshots looks simply fantastic, and obviously an insane amount of work "behind the curtains". Wow!

Wow, fantastic work. I remember always looking at the artwork on the album cover that had the shot of Clavius. Too cool.

From an OLD addon I attempted. I had to dig for this on my drive. Can't believe I still have it.

Linuxm@n:

This looks really cool!!!

FYI, if you use the Celestia 1.4.1-ED version of Celestia available on the motherlode education page, it has code that can process sound. Your script journey would be really augmented if you added a celx script that incorporated sound effects into the script. For example, 2001 had some very specific sound effects, such as the sound of Poole and Bowman breathing, the sound of their radar in the Pods, HAL's computer sounds, etc. I thing a few of the sound effects may be available on the net.

There is of course, also the option to play the main theme of 2001 via the sound script, or any other music you wish.

If this interests you, and you are able to find the sound effects, I can send you a celx script that I use which incorporates sound effects that can be activated by either script timing or keyboard key. Just give me your email address.

Hello Franck thank you for your suggestion, i have never try the celx for my scripts, but yesterday i have made one cel script to run with "the blue danube" waltz in celestia 1.41

It is not easy to run the script in and play the mp3 file with another program but it make good effects.

I made a movie under Linux with xvid4, i don't know if it include sound. (problem with my computer)
If you have fast connection you can try it
perhaps you have to rename file extention in avi, it is on mpeg4 divx format:

The blue danube 207 mb Danube.avi
Dave Bowman 2001 Eva.mpeg 159mb
Franck 2001 Murder.mpeg

on this page

http://celestiasws.free.fr/Video%202001/

In the danube video you can see the Clavius base, aries and new high resolution texture for the Space station as you can see here:

Image

Sorry Selden In 800 x 600 cause i have difficulty to use thumbail method

On the 2001 official site you can find some mp3 sound from the movie but the quality is very low.

I have health problem and i must stop my job along 2-12 months with strong medication.

I hope if i"am not to tired to have time to try celestia education and lot of addon to test the sound.

WOW!!! :D I just watched your movie while playing the Blue Danube on my MP3 player. It is well .... GREAT! I cannot believe Celestia has reached such a level of sophistication in its add-ons.

I can't wait to download the entire add-on and explore the world of 2001 in vivid detail. thank you for all this spectacular work!!!

Linuxm@n ,

I would like to watch your movies but I only get a download speed of 15 KB/s. Is your server slow, or is it just me? -- Other people seem to have managed OK.

I have a lot of difficulty to make ?  vid?©o with sound, i will try to make the part 2 with aries.
This afternoon i make some little modification on the cenral wheel for Station V to look as the movie
Tonight i tune Orion orbit to have a good landing in the space station.

2001 TEST PACK RELEASED

Hello !
A test pack for 2001 a Space Odyssey is available:

This is not finished, more many works on model ssc and xyz files to run perfectly with 1.50.
You could find a sub-folder scripts
3 scripts run perfectly on vista with 1.50

-Launch The blue Danube-1.50-kde and listen to the Blue Danube from Johann Strauss, this script show "the Floyd journey"

-Launch 2001-bowman-eva-cel1.50 to see Dave Bowman EVA

-Launch Eva-Murderfranck to see the pod attacking Franck Poole.

Try other script for 1.41 linux or gnome

Clavius base is now with dds texture ( surface from mercure )

Works fine on my computer but you must have a recent graphic card .

Dont forget to listen "The Blue Danube " with the first script.

Thank you to Runnar to give me the permission to use his mesh from buran for the smoke (Aries landing)

Some people seems have problem with 1.41 or with linux Mandriva 2008 or ubuntu 7.10

Tel me how it works on your computer and if a lower resolution pack would be better .

To have close-up view you can synchronise on little objects orbiting around:

-HAL 9000 computer to see inside Discovery
-Discovery radar
-Discovery doors
-Discovery pilot (during Bowman'EVA)
-Pod pilot to see inside cockpit
-Panel from the Clavius base,Aries base, astonauts, moonbus pose
-Moonbus pilot and copilot.

Its here:

I successfully downloaded the addon, but it's really painfully slow. And the movies aren't working at all (corrupted data, or wrong file format ?). This is frustrating, since the download was extremelly long, just to get a useless movie (can't see it !). :x

Well, my adsl connection is not fast:
Image
About 30mn
Danube 1 (with the music) and Franck-2001 murder 73 mo and 32 mo.
Try to rename mpeg extention in .avi, perhaps could you read them.

Yesterday i uploaded some little movie here:

http://www.dailymotion.com/genarolinux

I will upload 2001 movies here, have a look tonight.

I successfully downloaded the addon, but it's really painfully slow.

Recent computer is required but it run a little slowly on my old computer (athlon2400 geforce 4600) On the clavius base with Aries its slowly but orion s?©quense with station V is good.
On my new computer no problem (Vista 64 Gentoo 64bits celestia 1.50)

Do you think that textures are too big or models ?
Perhaps another lower version with simplified ssc file and lowres picture or dds pictures will be welcome ?

For example only one pod in the Discovery bay and no pilot inside pods, no HAL computer in the bay.

In the pack during Aries landing, a moonbus is flying at the same time and another one is landed on the base.
I' am working for moonbus'ssc replacement file and make a xyz orbit to Tycho, lift off is done it will be ready tomorow i think .
It will run faster, Aries will be alone.

That you mean about that, is that a good idea ?

Thank you

Did someone else test it?
