Buran 3D models

Post #1by ElecMoHwk » 05.12.2006, 13:44

Anyone know where to find these models? This site no longer has working links to 90% of what is on this page :(

The only ones that are there are the T-4 supersonic place for air launching rockets. It is in a BDF format, but I think this can be converted by some 3d programs?

NONE of the Buran models are there, all are "file not found"

:(

There's a Buran Addon for Orbiter. Maybe its author can be persuaded to make it available for Celestia.

Some relatively crude, non-redistributable models of Buran are available at http://www-c.inria.fr/gamma/download/af ... name=BURAN

Appears the BDF is a format for a program mentioned on the page.
I've attempted to contact the webmaster to see if there is any explanation or other information available.

I found a .3ds model for sale ($320.00) on a website... and it looks like it's one of these. All I can figure is that the model was stolen from this site and posted by someone else, because it's only one of the ones that was linked on the site. Also from what I can tell the models on the site were designed FOR that site and to be given out free... but I can't confirm that 100% as I don't read russian.

Any russian speakers on this forum?

Well, I am (obviously) Russian-speaking.
Buran.ru is an active and constantly updated site. There is no any announcement about technical problems or limitations of access. The page with models claims, that the models are for some graphical packet bCAD v.3.5. The link to freeware demo-version of this packet is located in the beginning of the page, the link to the site of its developer ?€“ in the end. Demo-version is said to be able to convert the models in other formats. In short, ElecMoHwk understood everything correctly.
If you are interested, there is also a recently finished 3D screensaver with Buran : http://www.buran.ru/htm/scr.htm (11.5 Mb). I didn?€™t try to test anything of this.

Buran on Celestia

Post #9by gualandd » 30.07.2007, 06:38

Hi to everyone,
from the site http://www.buran.ru/htm/3d-model.htm I've downloaded the zip file wich contains a 3DS model on the Buran ship with Energia propulsion system.
Trying to put the model in Celestia seems to works fine but sone surfaces became transparent/not rendered.
Converting it in Cmod don't improve the result, but with 3DS Mav 6 it works very fine.

Can someone help me?

What 3ds model ? I can only find some esoteric file format there.

Can you give a link to your 3ds model ?

Well, this is the link on the website:
http://www.buran.ru/3d/3D_Max/be.zip

To extract files you have to enter the password "energy".

I hope you can help me!

I'm taking a look at it. That model is very big. It crashed one of my modeler.

Also, don't forget that all textures should be resampled to powers of 2 only, to work in Celestia (512 X 256, 64 X 64, etc, ...)

That model is really huge. Heavily detailed.

The main problem I'm seeing is many parts are reverted. It needs some repairs...

Can you convert the other (smaller) models from that web site ?

Yes, this is a really huge model (converted in Cmod the size is about 99Mb, but Celestia runs perfectly on a normal PC wich 3DS not).
No, other models are for bCad. Traducing the page seems that this is the only model in standard 3D format.

I'm not a genius in 3D Max, so I don't know how to repair the model to be Celestia ready.

The pieces aren't optimised. There are tons of polygons and many parts inside the model which could be erased (not visible in Celestia). It will be way too much work for me to clean that mess. This model was explicitely done for rendering nice pictures in a renderer, not live animations in a program like Celestia.

This is the link for download bCad from the Buran site.
The Cad is in demo version and I don't think you can export in 3DS without the full version.
If it is possible, please let me now becausa I'm interested in these models, too.

I'm using a Mac, so I don't think this software will run on my machine.

And if it can't export to 3ds, what gives ?

The last think to do is repair the 3ds model.
I've made a Google search for some 3d file converters but none of the programs finded convert bdf files to 3ds...
