A model of the Hale Telescope on a DEM of Palomar Mountain and tracking Tau Ceti is available at

This addon works with Celestia v1.5.0pre2 and not with previous versions of Celestia. I suspect some changes will be needed for v1.5.0final.

Thanks!

That certainly makes the mountain ridges look realistic!

I put it in hires so I could use r and R to switch back and forth. That makes it obvious that the maps and model aren't quite aligned with one another :(

Could you provide an image of a slightly larger area so I could try making them all the same? Also, where did you get the image? If its license allows me to include it in the Addon, I'd like to include the appropriate credits.

:? I really guess this license not allows us because is an image from Google Earth (copyright 2006 Europa Technologies)

Right: if you carefully read G.E.'s license, you are not allowed to publish any of its images or works derived from them without the permission of all of the copyright holders. What you do with that data for your own personal, private enjoyment is up to you, of course.

I would like to thank Seldon for his hard work on this project! The model of the telescope & dome looks great! :D

Once we have v1.5.0final for the mac it will actually be shown to visitors at Palomar.

V2 of this Addon is almost finished.
It'll be available RealSoonNow. ;)

In the meantime, here's a 1.5 minute video showing some of its features. Several parts of the telescope can be manipulated and its light paths can be animated.

I'm glad you folks enjoy it :)

The animation is done using ScriptedOrbit and ScriptedRotation Lua routines. They detect the selection of various DSC objects which are used to trigger motion and visibility of the telescope's pieces.

I'm actually rather unhappy with the video. The timing changes caused by using Celestia's movie recorder messed up the rotation of the dome and of the telescope.

I just now watched the video. Wow! I'm very impressed with your clever use of scripted orbits and rotations. Vastly cooler than anything that I've done with them!

I've been looking at Seldon's work on this and I am quite impressed. I work at Palomar and he certainly has done a fantastic job.
